Postmodern architecture is an architectural style which began in the 1960s to respond to the modern architectural styles which took specific designs. Both architect designs have similarities and differences. Their designs use geometric shapes. This means that they apply regular lines and shapes when being designed. The paper will discuss the differences between the modern and postmodern architecture.
One of the differences is that modern architecture has a definable style while the postmodern architecture is an undefinable style. The modern style uses vertical lines, horizontal lines, and rectangular shapes. For instance, the elevated “table top” is a structure with a rectilinear shape ("Sharp Centre for Design - Arcspace.Com"). On the other hand, the postmodern architecture uses whimsical shapes. They do not apply the normal horizontal, vertical and rectangular shapes. For instance, Guggenheim Museum has a large symbolic space at its center and the sides are fully occupied by a gently spiral ramp. The architecture design gives it a unique view and utilization of the museum.
Another difference is that modern buildings are simple compared to the postmodern ones which utilize the art-deco. The “House in Ovar” shows its simplicity from the outside view (Webb). It is a modern house. The “Toronto's ROM Crystal” is an extension of the Royal Ontario Museum which has unique art-deco. Although it has been highly criticized, it is taking architecture to a higher level. In addition, the modern houses tend to be cheaper cost wise compared to the postmodern houses. Toronto's ROM Crystal cost $250 million ("Critics Divided over Toronto's ROM Crystal | CBC News") and the House in Ovar is approximately less costly.
