The Concept of Affordability of Food in Food Deserts

The article provides pertinent information on the specific rationale for food shortages in the food deserts. Various research studies had been conducted on the issue, and previous information indicated that the access to supermarkets and other retails areas prevented people from having food in their areas (News.ncsu.edu. 2018).

The research findings of the article concluded that the specific factor that has a huge impact on the availability of food in their homes is the fact that people have limited income and therefore have insufficient funds to spend on the food products (News.ncsu.edu. 2018). It is postulated that even though the retail places and supermarkets offered a variety of the food products including food and vegetables, many people within the food deserts were more concerned on the staple food highlighting the limited financial capability of the people. The research outlines that the affordability of the food in the food deserts should be enhanced through economic incentives as it is the main problem affecting the people living in food deserts.

Conflict Social Theory

The conflict social theory vividly elaborates the social situation in context. According to the theory, society consists of the owners and ruling class and the working class who doesn’t have to own any means of production. The social situation creates differences between the two groups owing to the different positions. Whereas the owner's bourgeoisie is interested in maintaining the top position in the society, the other group is interested in changing their situations through rising and overthrowing the top class in the society.

The issue of affordability of food is an issue of social, economic importance. As demonstrated in the article, many people within the food deserts have limited funds, and this makes them have limited choices on the food they can purchase. Therefore many people within the food deserts are in the working class and have no means of production which would help them to rise and afford different types of food. A conflict on the idea of the affordability of the food creates the division between people living in the food deserts and those living in other areas. The people living in the areas have limited capacity to buy as compared with other people and this depicts a situation with the creation of different people based on their economic capabilities.

According to the conflict theory, the situation can be solved by ensuring that the people within these regions have been provided with the economic empowerment opportunities. This would provide them with the ability to afford some of the food in their homes.

The limitations of the theory are that it fails to give information on the necessary actions that need to be conducted on the social situation. The theory majorly outlines the establishment of the situation.

Limitations of the research

The limitation of the research methods is that it failed to conduct research in other areas where people have huge access to food for the purpose of comparison. Through comparison, information would be obtained that would validate the research findings.

Additional information that needs to be added on the research includes the various occupation of the people in the food deserts and the contribution of engagement of the people towards the social and economic lives. This would ensure the reliability of the information ion formulation of the research objectives.
