The article “Preventing Child Sexual Abuse, What Parents Know?” analyzes the out parental information with regards to the prevention of child abuse in Saudi Arabia. The study begins with a definition of a sexual offense which is regarded as the engagement of a child in sexual activities without them giving the consent or in circumstances where they are not informed. Bakarman " Eljaaly (2017) state that about 20 percent of women and between 5-10 percent of men had a history of CSA. Due to the widespread child sexual abuse (CSA) cases, the society has responded by carrying out child protection campaigns with the primary focus being that parents or guardians need to protect their children from sexual abuse. Therefore, this explains why Bakarman " Eljaaly (2017) carried out an analysis on the perception of dangers of sexual offenses by guardians and parents. The study aims at identifying the knowledge on child sexual abuse in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and then uses it to come up with viable guide programs.
Bakarman " Eljaaly (2017) concluded that parents in Jeddah have considerable exposure to the issue of sexual abuse in children. The other factor is that many parents and guardians expressed their concern and were willing to take better care of their children. There was the effect that mothers could offer better attention to the children and protect them from being abused. Mothers tend to have more proximity with their children especially when they are young, which means that they can teach them on how to secure their private parts. Parents were also urged to be close to their children, be able to observe changes in their behaviors which could indicate if they have suffered child abuse (Chen " Chen, 2005).
Every child has the right to live decently without being physical, sexually or emotionally abused. Bakarman " Eljaaly (2017) further explain that adults who were abused and neglected when they were children tend to have low levels of education, poor salaries, and experience little employment opportunities. They may also be faced with psychological problems, and they tend to suffer from low self-esteem and depression. Parents have the responsibility to guide their children and teach them about the risks of CSA and how they can be able to protect themselves.
Type of article
The article covered is a research based on the fact that there is an empirical research study carried out by the author. There is a specific research population which is targeted which is the Jeddah region in Saudi Arabia. The sample size chosen for the study was 400 and inferences were drawn from the entire community. The research method used was systematic random sampling which the researcher thought would provide best results. The article tested the knowledge that parents and guardians in Saudi Arabia have on the aspect of CSA (Bakarman " Eljaaly, 2017).
Critique of the article
Validity
The validity of a research article is usually assessed concerning whether the experimental concepts used in a study, as well as the results, obtained satisfy the scientific research framework. A good illustration is that there was the use of the random sampling technique which shows that there was a particular control when selecting subjects for the study (Paler-Calmorin " Calmorin, 2007). Therefore, the article has evidence of internal validity based on the scientific steps. The design is slightly consistent. The methodology is well detailed and can be replicated in other studies. The reader can also be able to assess the essence of the research and how the data will be collected and used in testing the hypothesis. External validity is also covered in the article, where causal relationships between the report and other research on the area of study are assessed (Ogbuoshi, 2006).
Strengths
The study was well organized starting with an introduction which assessed the problems associated with CSA by use of facts and statistics. There was a precise definition of CSA, meaning that it would be easier for the reader to evaluate the research. An abstract is also provided which presents an outline of the structure what will be covered. The objective of the study is also assessed where the focus is one determining the out parental information on the subject of CSA (Bakarman " Eljaaly, 2017). There was a cross-sectional study which is very reliable when making inferences about the entire population. The sample for the study was (n=400). The use of random sampling is efficient as it ensures that bias is eliminated in research (Ogbuoshi, 2006). The data was collected regarding questionnaires which are appropriate for a survey, and they are a good source of primary data. Proper data analysis was conducted using the IBM SPSS utilizing a P Value<0.05 that is used for testing significance. The study avoided bias by using both male and female parents (Ogbuoshi, 2006). The response rate was 100% with 93.8% of the respondents expressing that they knew about CSA.
Weaknesses
The first challenge with the article is that the content of the work is somewhat limited. Therefore, specific areas were not covered extensively such as the conclusion part. The recommendation section was also missing. The conclusion seems to be made up of only a few issues which make the reader doubt whether the research topic was well thought off in the first place. Sections covering the hypothesis and research questions were also omitted; therefore the reliance was only on the objective of the study.
Agree/disagree
The article seems to have a good grasp on the aspect of CSA and the need to eradicate it. The approach of gathering information from parents and guardians with the necessity of providing better ways for them to protect their children against sexual abuse is also viable (Chen " Chen, 2005). The extensive literature reviewed in the study. All stakeholders should be involved in developing ways of dealing with CSA (Bakarman " Eljaaly, 2017).
Social work practice
The article covers ways in which social work values can be applied in helping children. The research can also be used to develop better methods of counseling and psychotherapy especially for those kids who have already been affected by CSA. Therefore, the critical focus of the work done by Bakarman " Eljaaly (2017) is focused on helping the community to improve the social and health levels of children.
