The war on terrorism has currently been intensified due to the rise in deaths and destruction that arise from terror attacks in the United States of America. Most measures that have been employed to deal with terrorism often touch on intelligence gathering and surveillance. In recent years, however, such measures have themselves posed immense challenges to the rights of humans, privacy, and the rule of law. Besides, some states have been involved in torture and inhumane treatment of terror suspects. Further such actions have ignored most legal aspects that prevent torture that include regular and impartial monitoring of the detention centers and taking care of the suspect's well-being. This proposal will discuss the various impacts of international war on terrorism on citizen privacy in the U.S. Further, the proposal will review literature that has been written in the topic and use qualitative analysis of data to come up with conclusive results.
CHAPTER I. INTRODUCTION
Recently, there has been an international outcry on the treatment of most terror suspects in ways that are inhumane and infringes on the rights of humans in the U.S. As a result, a number of international humanitarian organizations have risen complains of the need to fight terrorism in a way that preserves human rights across the world. The human cost of the war on terrorism has hit virtually every country around the globe (Foot, 2017). The search of information on terrorism has led U.S government agencies like the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) to tap communication systems and access private information in a way that invades on privacy.
Problem statement
From the period after World War II, the international community has faced a number of challenges in dealing with cases where citizens complain that their rights to privacy, liberty, and life have been threatened in the fight against terrorism (Rothe and Steinmetz, 2013). With the rise of technological advancement that has seen improved surveillance globally, there is a high likelihood of governments and counter-terrorism units misusing the gadgets at their disposal to spy on the private lives of individuals. The recommendations of the research that will be conducted based on this proposal will go a long way into helping the international community reduce infringement of human rights.
Research Aims and objectives
The aims of the research proposal will be inclined to understanding the impacts of international war on terrorism on human rights. In addition, the research will also be aimed at reducing the rate at which anti-terrorism policies go against human rights and privacy. The objectives of the research will be geared towards reducing human rights violation incidences that occur in the fight against terrorism.
Research questions
The following research questions will be used as a reference to the research activities that will be carried out in the paper:
(I) Is the international war on terrorism infringing on the personal privacy of citizens?
(II) What can be done to enhance the privacy of most citizens in the United States?
(III) Is it possible to carry out surveillance without jeopardizing civilian liberty?
(IV) Is the US government upholding the constitution and human rights in the war against terrorism?
Justification/Rationale of the research
The main reason that inspires the activities that will be carried out during the research includes the need to ensure that the international community respects the rights of all citizens in the war against terrorism. Further, the research will also be inclined to finding solutions to historical injustices that have been meted on most citizens who were suspected of being terrorists. The topic will also impact on European studies as terrorism and privacy have been major concerns across Europe.
CHAPTER III: METHODOLOGY
This section discusses the various research tools that will be used in the data abstraction, analysis, that will be collected in the process of carrying out the research.
Research Approaches
The approach to research will involve a number of philosophical assumptions on the topic of terrorism and international relations in general based on distinct methods and procedures. Notably, the broader research approach that will be used to conduct the research on human rights violation during the fight on terrorism in the United States will conduct analysis, the intersection of philosophy, various research designs, and particular data analysis tools. The approach will also look at national and international security provisions on fighting terrorism (Warshawsky, 2013).
Research Philosophy
This section will give a belief assessment of the ways in which the data about international relations and the war on terrorism will be gathered, analyzed and utilized in the research paper.
Data collection and analysis
Since most of the data needed for the research is made up of past information on international human rights, terrorism, and the impacts of strategies used to fight terror, the research paper will use a qualitative method in data collection (Denzin & Lincoln, 2008).
CHAPTER IV: RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
This section will be used to discuss the results from the data collected and analyzed in the previous sections.
Timeline
The research will be conducted over a period of 6 months with milestones such as data collection and analysis being recorded as soon as they are achieved.
