A historical purpose is recreating the past happenings and events into documentation for future reference. The purpose is to help the readers understand that religion and faith started back in time. The bible was written many centuries ago, but translation and application of its message are still upheld and practised by many evangelists to preach the gospel. The paper discusses the historical purpose for writing the books of Luke, Acts, and John.
The historical purpose behind the writing of Luke’s gospel is to account for the life of Jesus as a teacher of the doctrine. Saint Luke being the most loved disciple of Jesus narrates the message of Jesus as hope and restoration (Google, 2018). In the book, Luke states that Jesus is crucified by the political powers and executed as a criminal (John, C. " Cox, J. 2012). He tries to bring the message of compassion and forgiveness to his followers. Luke and the rest of the disciples are left with the task of spreading the gospel to the world. Being a clear indication that the word is to be covered from generations to generations. However, the people spreading the must be informed and educated to preach what is written. The primary purpose is to prove that Christians can become better citizens of the Roman Catholic Church through following the teaching of Luke. The book of Luke teaches Christians and believers how God fulfilled the plan of salvation to the world through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus as the promised Messiah (John, C. " Cox, J. 2012).
The book of acts as written by Saint Luke continues with the account of Christ’s life, the author interprets the previous text to Theophilus that means ‘loved of God.’ The interpretation and purpose describe the life of the church through the history life of the Messiah. The gospel teaches the church to live in humility and follow the teachings of Jesus. Although written in the first century, the church is expected to practice and spread to the generations to come. The church already exists in the error of Jesus; however, He came to save and renew it from the falling sins and world pleasures (Google, 2018). The apostles chosen were taught the message and asked to spread to the world for generations to come that the church is to be protected by following the commands and laws given by the Messiah “teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matt 28:20a). Therefore, the main historical purpose of Saint Luke writing the book of Luke is to depict the beginning of the church and state what the church is to do according to the teachings of Messiah.
Another disciple of Jesus, John, also took into account the gospel of Christ. John as the loved disciple was very close to Jesus at trial times. The purpose of the book is to inform the church of the signs and miracles with a connection to faith. For instance, the church blessed with abilities and gifts from different persons. Each gifted has to use the God-given power to heal, praise, and save the church. The miracles and powers of Jesus are portrait and exhibited in the book like walking on water, healing the sick, casting demons, and a gift of prophecy (Graham, S. 2002). Jesus is an actual example of the church, uses the gifts for the benefit of the church and not for self-gain. Therefore, the brethren are expected to follow the same direction and use the God given gifts.
