Demographics in the United States

Inequalities between individuals, households and other groups of different demographics or socio economic levels is the cause for large differences between states according to the datasheet. One factor that has brought about the differences is immigration. Most immigrants arrive from Latin America and Asia. Their presence alter the population size of the states they settle, they also lead to an increase of foreign born in the state they settle down. Most immigrants arrive in USA in search for better employment opportunities but many lack the required papers to get access to these opportunities. Therefore this leads to an increase of unemployment rate in the states their settle in. Some immigrants come to USA as foreign investors or in search of better executive jobs. These type of immigrants settle in high end cities in New York, Washington DC or California. Therefore contributing to the large population living above the poverty line and therefore they can afford average household income and above. The immigrants in these states most of them are learned therefore contributing to the population that is high school graduate and above.

Digital divide is also a contributing factor to the differences among states. Digital divide is the inequality in access to information and communication technologies and in the knowledge and skills needed to effectively use the information gained from connecting. Some states lack better access to technology thus causing the demographics gaps in median household income and unemployment rate.  Internet connectivity varies widely state by state in the USA. For instance 89% of Washington occupants are connected to the internet in one or more locations or on one or more devices, while 59% of all Mississippi occupants are connected to the internet in one or more locations or on one or more devices. The USA government efforts to close the digital divide includes both private and public sector participation to develop policies that addresses information infrastructure and digital literacy to promote a digital society in the United States.

Another contributing factor to the differences in demographics among states is laws. In the USA different states are governed by different laws. For instance in Texas , a person can buy a gun in any store provided the person has no past criminal charges, while in California you need a special license to be able to possess one.  Other states have legalised same-sex marriages while others do not recognise it.  Others states have put in place rulings that have benefited the wealthy at the expense of the working class. As a result the states tend to experience high income inequality compared to other states. Tax laws or regulation have contributed to differences in poverty rate among states. Some states increase taxes on basic supplies, such as housing, electricity, and telephone services, which classically consume a larger share of the budget of lower income households than the more affluent households.
