Benefits and Limitations of Artificial Intelligence

In the recent past, the world has witnessed the growth of artificial intelligence (AI). In fact, AI has formed part of human life because it provides a wide range of services via gadgets such as voice-activated virtual assistants, smart thermostats, and smartphones. Such devices assist to deliver outstanding services, which assist to promote the lives of average consumers (Narula 1). Through AI, humans enjoy excellent services such as commuting. Although artificial intelligence has a myriad of benefits it also various limitations, which restrict their application. The paper will examine the cons and pros of AI in the modern world.

Artificial intelligence is vital in the contemporary world because it has revitalized different types of activities such as commuting. For instance, it has facilitated the development of digital maps such as Google maps, which assist people to find their location and assess the best manner in which reach their destinations. Moreover, the modern airplanes take advantage of this innovation by utilization of the autopilot feature that is entirely controlled via the AI. Reports have indicated that manual operation of aircrafts such as Boeing 777 required double the amount needed when using an autopilot (Markoff 1). More importantly, the autopilot enables the pilot to concentrate specifically on landing and take-offs hence assists to deliver flight safety. It is essential since without such feature, the number of plane crashes would be very high each year.

Artificial intelligence has facilitated convenience in the society through development of websites and search engines such as Google. The website has assisted to make great strides to improve the lives of the people as they deliver services via the deep learning technology. For instance, people can easily search pertinent information on the internet (Whitney 1). Furthermore, the deep learning has empowered organizations to apply AI in medical field because it is capable of finding accurate and fast solutions.

Similarly, AI’s benefits extend to business sector because it simplifies documentation and data entry, which is time intensive (Whitney 1). Most organizations suffer from challenges related to data duplication and inaccuracies hence the need for predictive modelling and machine learning organizations. Reports suggest that computers are simply more precise at pulling off various functions in human hence permit workers to concentrate on crucial tasks in the firm (Whitney 1).

On the other hand, artificial intelligence has various disadvantages, which restrict their application. Precisely, AI is associated to job losses because it takes up tasks for lesser-skilled cadre. Research has pointed out that AI threatens the existence of low-skilled jobs in different parts of the world (Kasparov 10). For instance, driverless cars have the potential to displace thousands of human chauffeurs and drivers per year. Additionally, robots can perform tasks such as accounting in the future. Consequently, it will aggravate the problem of unemployment, which eventually contributes to increased levels of crime, poverty, and mental depression in the community (Kulkarni and Joshi 50). Notably, people denied work life might not discover any way to positively utilize their energies or take advantage of their expertise.

Additionally, substituting human beings with robots in various sectors may not be an appropriate decision. There is a wide range of tasks, which demand the human touch (Kaplan 16). For this reason, artificial intelligent devices would not have the capacity to replace for the caring traits of professionals such hospital doctors and nurses. In this regard, AI does not offer appropriate alternative for customer service. One of the key challenge in the use of AI features is that they lack human character hence they do not have a sense of feel (Kaplan 17). They lack the ability to operate passionately or wholeheartedly. There is no feeling of togetherness or belonging.

The application of artificial intelligence is curtailed because of high cost of development. Studies have pointed out that development of AI demands huge budgets, as they are very complicated devices (Kasparov 13). In addition, their maintenance and repair demands huge costs. AI machines contain software packages, which demands constant upgrading to deal with the necessities of the changing environment. Frequent upgrading is inevitable because such technologies must be smarter (Kulkarni and Joshi 49). However, in instances of serious breakdowns, the technique to reacquire lost codes and installing the networks might need high cost and time.

The usability of artificial intelligence is limited because they lack creativity and does not improve based on experience. They differ from human labour because their skills do not increase based on experience (Kasparov 13). However, continuous use contributes to tear and wear. They store huge amount of data but they are incapable of changing their reactions in accordance with environmental changes. Likewise, they are deprived of imaginations and creativity (Kulkarni and Joshi 49). Significantly, they cannot be compared with the power of human brain hence functions without creative mind or originality.

Conclusion

Artificial intelligence is important innovation, which have a wide range of benefits in the modern society. They are beneficial because they perform a particular precision, which helps to reduce errors. For instance, they are used as autopilots planes especially in landing and taking-off hence significantly reducing the plane crashes. However, they can be a source of unemployment in the community because they replace the human labour such as chauffeurs and taxi drivers (Kulkarni and Joshi 49). They are also limited since they work without passion, creativity or originality.
