Analysis of Oedipus by Sophocles

Oedipus Rex: Choose a specific concept and example discussed in class about design (in terms of set, sound, costume, or lighting), and discuss what the most important thing that type of design provides to any given performance.

Section 1

I thought the Oedipus Rex was just a normal play until I attended a theatre. People had talked evil about the play but I decided that it is the high time I experience the real performance. I sympathize with Oedipus. His own father plans to execute him and he is left in the fields to suffer the cold and the wrath of wild animals. I could not imagine a scenario in the old ratchet clothes he was wearing in the name of coming from a cursed family. I agree with the fact that Oedipus survives and is adopted by a royal since he advances the play to experience the disastrous experience by the Oracle. This resonated my personal life and remembered sometimes when my mother the threatened to disown me for being stubborn and unapologetic after a mistake.

Section 2

The director Raymond Dunstan directs the crew to start on a high-level performance. The audience pays attention as everyone is concerned about how some characters like Oedipus and Jocasta converse with each other. The gods are angry with them and the king’s family is stricken with a curse that sends the king to plan to assassinate his own son. The scenes are performed in a calculated pattern. There is a significant relay of the king’s family, their good life and also what happens to cause the breaking of the family.

The orchestra sounds presented brings a unison and moment of silence in the theatre hall. The rhythmic sounds continue as the young child is left in the woods. However, the orchestra sound sheds light and mercy upon the kid after he is rescued and taken by another family. The lights are gloomy and one can only see the actors’ faces. There are sorrow and grief as the horsemen and king’s right-hand men are giving orders. King Laius and Queen Jocasta are dressed in long khaki tops while Oedipus is dressed in a black trouser and white shirt as he marches past the crowd. The costumes are made to symbolize between people in peace and the ones in trouble.
