The article assigned is ‘An Anthropological Look at Human Sexuality’ by Patrick & Linda. It gives an insight into the anthropological conceptualization of human sexuality. Specifically, the authors address aspects of sexuality including the society’s variation of sexuality. The article presents the society’s definitions of sexuality. These definitions give birth to phenomena like incest sex, youth sexuality, sexually active youths and societal attitudes towards premarital sex. The authors also proceed to address the presentation of human sexuality across age groups.
Among the adults, sexuality is expressed by marriage relationships. The anthropology argument is that the society enacts rules that govern the marriage institution. However, with a changing society, patterns and rules in marriage institution are changing. Some scenarios include the male expression of homosexual behaviors. The authors argue that although homosexuality might be conceptualized through ignorance as similar across the world, the societal context affects its expression and practice. For instance, I was impressed to learn that there are distinct patterns in homosexual partners in different geographical locations like the US and India.
The authors were able to address some stubborn issues that influence the society’s attitude regarding homosexuality. The explanation on society’s role to conform individuals conform to the rules was intrigued. I agree with the argument that boys who are subjected to rules that require them to achieve a masculine identity might reject the social rules to conformity when they are unable to achieve the requirements. In the struggle to find an identity, they are more likely to return to homosexual behaviors. I also learnt that male homosexuality has different patterns for example the Azande and Melanesian pattern.
I was also impressed by the cultural meanings that society attach to sexual behavior. I learnt that different sexual positions among heterosexuals reflect on aspects of cultural significance. I also agree with the author’s conceptualization of sex as a ritual in most cultures. The article was very informative and gave me a new perspective to conceptualize human sexuality.
