In this article, Elizabeth uses a collection of examples to support her arguments and convince the reader on her claims. The examples provided give the impression that the writer has done extensive research on the topic. The examples provided appeal to the logos of the readers. Elizabeth makes a conscious effort to quote several experts on diverse issues concerning generation Z.  For example, on the clothing issues, Kyle Andrew, chief marketing officer of American Eagle Outfitters posits, “They’re less brand-conscious and they are not spending as much as millennials do.” Similarly, Steven Lammerick, the founder and CEO of the Cirqle affirm, “Generation Z is more willing to hear a brand’s story when it is part of a narrative their peer is already telling” ”(Segran).  Elizabeth provides direct quotes from various people, therefore, convincing the reader through facts.


The article uses both formal and informal diction this making it easy to understand and read. For example, in the passage, the writers shorten words indicating that it is an informal piece. Elizabeth states, “Like many of her peers, she doesn’t think of college as a relaxing period for self-discovery and navel-gazing.” Instead of writing she ‘does not’, she shortens the word to ‘she doesn’t’. While quoting Emerson Spartz words “They have the strongest bullshit filter because they’ve grown up in an era where information was available at all times” (Segran).  Elizabeth chooses to include the word ‘bullshit’ in the piece. The choice of words indicated the informal and less serious tone presented in the document. While reading the article the reader gets the impression that it is not a serious research analysis, but an article aimed at giving an entertainment piece about generation Z. the writers writes for the third person point of view thus incorporating a formal tone. Elizabeth in the Document uses the words ‘They’ to refer to the subject of the topic. The third person point of view is common in formal writing indicating that the writer does not have any personal attachment to the subject. The third person point of view allows the reader to trust the writes argument as objective.


The tone of the article is friendly since the writer uses less sophisticated words to communicate to the reader. Elizabeth shortens many words in the article allowing the reader to feel comfortable and understand the article better. Elizabeth appeals to the emotions of the reader through using examples that resonate with their life. For instance, she uses Makino to describe how generation Z is responsible and cares about the cost of their education. Makino asserts, “But if you step off the treadmill for even a minute, you start accruing [interest] on your student loans”(Segran). Accumulation of interest on student’s loans s a problem that affects many people, this sentence allows the reader to identify with the struggles of generation Z.
