Theft Terminology: Robbery, Burglary, and Larceny
The robbery, burglary, and larceny terminology all involve taking valuable items or property from an individual. Robbery, burglary, and larceny differ depending on the nature of the theft. Regarding robbery, it is an act of taking an individual's item in his or her presence by force. Secondly, burglary is the act of breaking or entering a person's building to commit a crime while the person is not around. With robbery, the robbers confront the victims directly while in the burglary case, burglars do not want to be seen.
Larceny is the possessing of someone's property unlawfully with the intention of denying the rightful owner of his property permanently. It is similar to burglary because there is no use of force during the crime as opposed to the robbery where threats are used during the crime.
Challenges and Considerations in Burglary Investigations
There are numerous challenges faced by those in charge of investigation when it comes to burglary.
Identification of Suspects
Notably, burglary involves breaking or entering a person's building when the owner is not around. The ability to get the ID of the right suspect is one of the challenges that it is evident. Burglary in most cases occurs when the owner is not around and therefore it is hard to give a proper description of the suspect and time the crime occurred.
Improving Investigation Techniques
The law enforcement should set a high priority for burglary cases and train investigators not to pressure victims in order to improve investigation. The leaders should also encourage crime scene investigation as a starting point to the mindset around the examiner versus investigator needs to be challenged within the investigation. Pressurizing the victims for information sometimes deny them the right to talk freely about the incidence. In order to bring a huge value to the investigation, the local and intelligence analysts also need to be updated on the common offender's trends based on the decisions made on the outcome of the investigation.
