Age Discrimination in the Workplace

Thesis Statement: Age Discrimination: rights of workers. Abrams, Dominic, Hannah J. Swift, and Lisbeth Drury. "Old and unemployable? How age‐based stereotypes affect willingness to hire job candidates." Journal of Social Issues 72.1 (2016): 105-121.

The authors of this article begin first by showing that individuals are either required or in some cases they want themselves to work until a particular set old age. The article then seeks to find out how prospective employers would conceive prospective job applicants who have skills that are mostly associated with old people. The article bases its arguments on the social age theory and age stereotypes. The authors also research hiring basis used by employers. The authors report on three studies using participants from North America with distinct ages. In their studies, they found out that individuals with older age stereotypes usually stand lower chances of being employed. They also find out that even if a job is considered a low-status job, individuals with younger profiles are preferred. They conclude by stating that an older individual will only be considered for hiring if his/her role will be subordinate to an individual with a younger profile. The authors also discuss the impacts of age selection stereotypes and how the age stereotypes can be eliminated. The article is essential in my essay because it is based on an actual study. This shows that age discrimination in the workplace is something that exists up to now.

Cheung, Chau-Liu, Ping Kwong Kam, and Raymond Man-hung Ngan. "Age discrimination in the labor market from the perspectives of employers and older workers." International Social Work 54.1 (2011): 118-136.

The authors’ of the article conducted a study among 787 older employees (aged 45 and above) and 283 employers in Hong Kong. The authors intended to get the perspective of age discrimination from both the employers and employees. They also sought to find out whether an organization social responsibility and the profit-making goal has an impact on the age discrimination. The authors found out that organizations social responsibility contributes significantly to the age discrimination in the workplace. They also found out that organization goal of profit making has nothing to do with age discrimination in the workplace. Besides, they also found that other negative stereotypes are correlated with age discrimination. The article is relevant for my essay since it provides both the employer and employees perspective.

Hunter Jr, Richard J., John H. Shannon, and Henry J. Amoroso. "A Fresh Look at an Old Problem-Age Discrimination in Employment: Is There A Demographic and Political Trap?." Journal of Public Administration and Governance 8.1 (2018): 68-85.

The article shows that discrimination is still a more significant problem in the American society. Specifically, discrimination based on age. The authors give an account of how the legislation protecting old workers in Northern America was conceived of in the first place. Older workers had to be protected in the workplace as their rights were continually violated. The article then proceeds to provide a detailed explanation of the forms of discrimination. Although not the core themes of the article, the different forms of discrimination that exists are given and possible examples. The authors proceed to explain the different types of age discrimination. Discrimination due to old age and discrimination due to young age. The authors also attempt to show the various remedial actions for the violation of the Federal Age Discrimination Act of 1967 otherwise popularly known as ADEA. The article also explains about the violations to the act and the situations that demand waiver of the act. The authors conclude by giving an analysis of several cases. They also test the reliability of ADEA currently and in the future. The article is relevant for my essay because not only does it trace the origin of age discrimination in the workplace but also predicts what the future holds for age discrimination. It tests the reliability of the ADEA in the future. The source is also readily accessible.
