What is Measles?

Measles is a very contagious viral disease that primarily affects children. It causes fever, coughing, red eyes and a rash called Koplik's spots on the inside of the cheeks.

Measles can be very serious and can result in a number of complications, including pneumonia, ear infections, eye infections, and encephalitis (an infection that causes brain swelling). The risk of complications increases for those who are not fully vaccinated.

Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent measles, and routine vaccination can be given from age 12 months onwards. It can be given in combination with a vaccine for mumps and rubella, known as MMR.

Most people who have measles will recover within a couple of weeks. However, some may need to be hospitalized or have severe complications, such as a weakened immune system.

The first symptoms of measles usually appear within a few days after an infected person is exposed to the virus. This is known as the incubation period. The incubation period can last up to two weeks, but most of the time it only lasts for one or two weeks.

It's very important to avoid contact with anyone who has measles, as it's highly infectious and can be transmitted four days before and after the appearance of the rash. If you're worried about your child, call a doctor or clinic and describe their symptoms over the phone.

If your child does have measles, you'll need to make sure they take plenty of fluids to help prevent dehydration (a condition that can occur when you have diarrhea). They'll also need to rest and keep quiet.

Your doctor can also prescribe antibiotics to treat your child's ear or eye infections, as well as some medicines to reduce fever and pain in the stomach and chest. They may also give your child a shot of immune globulin, a blood product that contains antibodies to the measles virus, to reduce the severity of their illness and prevent the spread of measles to other people.

You can also get antibiotics from a pharmacist if you think your child has a bacterial infection such as pneumonia or an ear infection that may be caused by measles. They can also prescribe medicine to make your child sleep better and keep them calm.

Measles can be fatal if not properly treated. Those with very low vitamin A levels are especially at risk, as are those who are not vaccinated or have had a weakened immune system due to conditions such as HIV/AIDS.

The best way to prevent measles is by making sure your child receives the MMR vaccine, as soon as they are old enough. You can ask your doctor for more information about the vaccines that are recommended for your child.

If you or your child has measles, you'll want to stay at home and not go to work until it is over. It's also important to avoid contact with other people if possible.

Symptoms of measles usually start seven to 14 days after an infected person is exposed. They usually include a runny nose, a sore throat, a cough, and fever.
