What exactly is the point of a college education?

Nowadays, going to college to pursue a certain curriculum has lost its significance because it has become an important part of life's phases. The tuition fee and the standard of the services available are both being scrutinized. However, there have been many programs offered in different colleges that, through closer examination, are either duplicates of other programs or completely irrelevant to everyday life. As a result, we have an influx of graduates every year, and it is disheartening to notice that they contribute little benefit to our economy and lack real-world experience from their numerous courses. Having noted this, the question of the impact of society on the purpose of college education begs for answers. The point of contention is whether the societal demand for every individual to be accorded respect equivalent to the level of his or her education level has caused the pitfalls in the purpose driven importance of college education. Subsequently, this might have led to a deterioration in the standard of quality of education and consequently, leaving the purpose of college education in doubt. In addition, the fact that college education is a societal demand today has led to the sprouting of much high learning institutions that no longer consider the purpose neither the quality of college education as they lower the college entry grades to get more clients to their business by more clients more profitable. However, this should not change our view of the purpose of college education in the life of an individual and even to the society at large. Therefore, this paper seeks to establish the purpose of a college education to an individual also the organization.
College networks and matures students experience
If you ask any parent who has taken his or her child to college, you will come with so many answers that will assist your understanding of the societal perspective of the purpose of college education. Most students attend colleges just as a formality it is of significance to note that college is for networking and maturing experience. The argument around the point of college education being a place where a student can learn to behave maturely in life is very real. Most of the students attend colleges when they cannot even stand to communicate in public without wishing the ground to open up and swallow them. However, when they leave the college after completion of their various programs, they become great orators that are admired by many (Seidman 123). In addition, they learn networking through group work and other ways of interactions improving their ambivalence so that at the completion of their college education even those who joined the college as introverts are much able to interact with the outside world without fear. Subsequently, the networking factor assists them to keep in contact hence help others get job opportunities through their fellows who find vacancies that suit their professions. The networking factor does not only end there, but it also helps in times of need for instance, when one of the college mates is ailing and is unable to raise the money for medical bills, former college mates when called into action to raise money to help clear the bills(Petty 258). Alternatively, networking can later be used by those students who have political ambitions to achieve their dreams of becoming politician through the assistance of their former college mates either financially morally or even selling his or her ideas to people. On the other hand, the students with business ambitions can benefit from the network of their former college mates to get business opportunities and also to sell their p
College education is a requirement in life
As time goes by, it is also important to note that in life everyone will be required to have a college education to cope with the changes in the world (Riera 117). One would argue that you do not need some college education to cope with life, but the truth is with all the technological advancement honestly shortly if not already, one will require a college education in order not to be considered primitive. Everything is changing so fast, and even those who had acquired degrees in particular fields of study still find it hard to cope with life in some circumstances bringing to question the experience of not having attained any level of college education.
Attaining college education to get a job and be financially stable and independent
Even though college education entails a lot the primary purpose of one attaining college degree differs from one individual student another, the primary reason of taking a program at the college is mere to get a job be financially stable and independent (Nucci et al. 106). It was evident that after graduation the students embark on the job hunt. This shows that the primary purpose of going to college is furthering knowledge in the area of study one wishes to focus his or her career on. The purpose of a college education, in this case, is to teach individual skills they had little or no knowledge about beforehand. In addition, it exposes them to areas of extensive career they have in mind and allow them to learn more about each other mainly what they are most interested to know (Saichaie, Kem, and Morphew 506). Therefore a college education is an incredible opportunity for anyone to learn and grow and to help individuals move forward in life.
College education gives everyone equal opportunities to actualize their dreams regardless of their backgrounds
As well, the purpose of college education is to give brighter students from poor backgrounds a chance to study according to their career choices and get jobs to be of help to themselves and even their low-income families (Nucci et al. 106). We always say that education is an equalizer which means merely that education gives equal opportunities to students regardless of their backgrounds to study and become successful in future. Therefore college education gives brighter students from poor background hopes for a better tomorrow and this encourages them to work hard not only in class and also nature them for future (Hodges, and Crowe 8). For instance, most of brilliant heads of organizations, successful people in business, and career persons if you trace their backgrounds, you will discover that not all were coming from well to do families and if they do, then they must have been very hard working in class.
College gives students lifetime opportunity to expand their horizons and learn new things
A college education gives students lifetime opportunity to expand their horizons and learn new things. For instance, when college opens admission for new students, they allow all students from different cultural and racial backgrounds to apply. By doing this, the students from diverse racial and cultural backgrounds interact. This avails an opportunity to learn from each other’s cultural background, race and beyond. This may encourage the students to debunk any racial biases they presumed and learn from diverse cultural and racial background (Saichaie, Kem, and Morphew 509). It enriches students learning and opens their eyes to the cultures and races they had misconceptions about and leaves them with an open mind. With an open mind, the past biases and prejudices one may have are set free and are no longer used in someone’s judgment. It does not mean that if someone does not go to college, they cannot free themselves from these biases, however, the emphasis that college education encourages it and makes it easy for someone to understand and leave it. The knowledge obtained in a college will follow someone for the rest of their life, throughout their resumes and interviews for jobs. People have a better chance of pursuing a career though everybody needs to learn through different aspects.
College education natures and nurtures talents
The college administrations and leadership always set up various leadership posts for students. The importance of this is to nurture students to be future leaders and as well presents them with the responsibility of a leader in real life. Later in life, it would motivate one to be a leader considering he or she has all that it takes to be a leader. Hence, this is to encourage them to have in mind that they are the leaders of tomorrow (Saichaie, Kem, and Morphew 519). Colleges through sporting events offer an opportunity for students that are talented in sports to perfect their art through sports competition. Eventually, the talented students at college become great sportsmen and women in life and earn a living from that. Even those who are good in drama get opportunities of learning from the best drama teachers during dram festivals making them realize their dreams (Saichaie, Kem, and Morphew 521). College education system helps polish and fashion such talents and prepare them for the outside world. It also gives them the platform to practice and be a better artist, leader or athlete,
College education teaches the students the values of unity, self-reliance, responsibility and independence
Self-reliance, independence, unity, and responsibility are some of the qualities that we always admire from those who have attained a college education. Majority of those who attain or pursue college degrees or diplomas are always almost eighteen years and above. At this stage, most of the parents need to see the qualities they have been teaching their children since childhood. It is also beyond parents control since most of the students travel far to go and pursue their various studies (Chiappetta, and. Koballa 143). This at times becomes the most challenging stint in the lives of the students who are joining college from high school, and at the same time, it prepares the students with all the basic qualities they will need when they get a job after graduation. A student has to be self-reliant and trustable to give the parents easy time regarding handling pocket money and even not to make parents be worried on whether he or she is at school or not(Chiappetta, and. Koballa 143). And most students who come out of college as self-reliant and trustable succeed in life because even the employers look for people of integrity.
Independence and responsibility make the students succeed and obtain good grades in college. A student does not need to be pushed to attend class. However, at this point, most students end up wasting their lives by partying every day, doing drugs and even getting involved in crimes. A person who has attained college education has a responsibility as one of the qualities he has practiced for some time, and he is expected by the employer to work under minimal supervision or no supervision (Nucci et al. 112). Equally college education prepares one for the real job environment.
College education also plays a significant role in bringing people to together from different races and ethnic backgrounds. It plays the role of uniting people and also encourages people to accept criticism of their character, culture, races behaviors or ideas. By organizing sporting events, which is intrinsic college education curriculum, students from different races interact and play together, and the winners are rewarded. Moreover, this teaches the students that in life there is winning and losing and if you lose you leave to fight another day and if you win you work harder to maintain your position (Chiappetta, and. Koballa 143). Likewise, it is not easy to take criticism even in real life situation but the college education environment encourages students to take criticism since not all the things someone does will be pleasing to everyone. Students also learn to embrace and appreciate other cultural activities and races apart from theirs. So this makes a great learning experience and impacts new things on students. Eventually, this will help the students to cope with real life and have an idea on how to survive in different environments.
Counterarguments
Ostensibly, they have been a plausible argument that college education is not a determinant of the success of an individual and people even tend to believe that some of the most successful people in life dint attain a college education. Also, the rate of unemployment makes the society to doubt whether the purpose of education is for the good of it. Also, the lack of life skills by graduate and make it more compelling to try and find out whether a college education is pertinent to real life and the good of the society(Hines, Borders, and Gonzalez 255). However, the society is to be blamed for setting educational level as the threshold of the respect an individual is accorded. Subsequently, this has led to unemployment considering that colleges are trying to find a course for every individual even those with deficient high school grades. In turn, this course becomes irrelevant hence the high rate of unemployment. On the other hand, the argument that most of the student are indiscipline and that colleges don’t install discipline on students is dead on arrival considering that even the society is intrinsic to impacting discipline on students.
Also the employers at some point avoid employing people who have attained a particular level of education due to their previous experience of dismal performance by such people. Consequently, this has lead to those who have not attained college education bluffing at those attained college education as having wasted their time (Hines, Borders, and Gonzalez 259). Whereas that is the case, we cannot debunk this, but it is important to note in some cases the people who attain college education have no intention of getting employed since they want to be self-employed as some are even too lazy to search for jobs. And also the college education has not failed to address the issue of unemployment considering that there are already courses that are being offered by the various college that are meeting the changes in the employment market.
Conclusion
College education becomes intrinsic to daily life and serves a broader range of purposes to the society. Even the economy and sobriety of any society depends on college education and apart from employment and a financial endowment that comes with it, the orderliness in the organization depends on college education no matter how hard we try to avoid admitting.
