Vlad Tepes (Vlad III of Wallachia)

In Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula, Vlad Tepes (Vlad III of Wallachia), the Voivode of Wallachia, is credited with inspiring the character of Count Dracula. He was a brutal ruler who committed atrocities, most famously for his indiscriminate killings that were intended to intimidate his enemies.

His ruthless treatment of enemies in his fight for power earned him the sobriquet vlad tepes or Vlad the impaler, and he is known as one of the most bloodthirsty rulers in European history. His cruelty would most likely be deemed crimes against humanity by current standards, and he was probably responsible for killing thousands of people.

He ruled as the Voivode of Wallachia from 1456 until his death in battle in 1477. He is best known for his cruel and brutal acts against his enemies, especially the Ottoman Empire.

In his fight against the Ottomans, he used a method called impalement to execute his enemies. This technique involved tying the victim to a horse and then forcing a sharpened stake into their body.

As a rule, the victim was left to die outside the town in which they were impaled. Often, the stake was placed in a pattern that symbolized their rank.

The resulting corpses were then left to rot for months until they died of exposure.

It is not known for certain how many people he killed during his reign but estimates range from 20,000 to 50,000. The massacres he carried out were meant to terrorize his opponents and allies alike, and to intimidate those who wished to attack him.

He killed many foreign and domestic enemies, as well as members of his own family. He also killed a significant number of Moldavian soldiers and forced Basarab Laiota, who had dethroned his brother Radu, to flee Wallachia in November 1475.

His ruthlessness was such that some historians have suggested that he could shape-shift into a bat to strike fear in his enemy. It is unclear whether this was fact or fiction, but it is a fascinating idea that has remained popular in folklore.

At the time, Vlad was a member of the Order of the Dragon, a Christian military order that was primarily responsible for protecting the Church. This organization defended the Church from threats to the Catholic faith, including the Ottomans and their supporters in Europe.

During his rule as the Voivode of Wallachia, he committed a wide variety of atrocities against both his enemies and the population of Wallachia. His cruel methods of killing and torture were considered to be crimes against humanity by contemporary standards, and his mass murders would most likely amount to genocide or war crimes by modern standards.

The stories he told about his brutalities spread throughout Europe, causing his crimes to become a topic of debate. These stories were subsequently published in books, some of which had woodcuts on their title pages depicting horrific scenes. These books were among the first “bestsellers” in Europe.

The legend of Vlad the Impaler is particularly prominent in the German-speaking territories, and was regarded as an important figure in the history of medieval Europe. Several accounts of his cruelty were published in German and Italian languages. Some of these books were reprinted as bestsellers in the following centuries.
