In recent years, there has been a speculation about the viability of school uniforms. Some argue they are incorrect and out of date, whilst others believe they promote a good picture within educational institutions. Some people feel that these clothes are obsolete, and they want politicians to get rid of them. They are thought to be tedious, to impede adult growth, to attract market desires, and to damage one’s self-image. As a result, the dress is thought to be out of date. Nonetheless, even with those feelings, it is clear that school uniforms are extremely important in educational institutions. Although upon entering high school students are adamant against the idea of wearing uniforms, it becomes apparent that with time uniforms not only improve students’ academic success but overall social well-being. As such, this paper will strive to illustrate the importance of school uniforms in learning institutions.

Importance of School Uniforms

School uniforms play a significant role in enhancing professionalism and augmenting self-image. Professionalism is an important facet when children develop and enter the corporate world. Therefore, the attires are meant to discipline individuals at tender ages. When they grow into the corporate world, they are supposed to abide by the existing principles. They also raise the degree of approval amongst peers. Students are also able to concentrate on other aspects apart from clothing in a uniform culture. In that regard, the uniforms enhance discipline from tender ages as the students grow into the corporate world. A disciplined student is bound to be successful in the corporate world (Imberman 22).

Uniforms promote the sense of pride, unity, and good spirits within the community. According to a 2007 study conducted by Oxford Brookes University, uniforms contribute significantly in developing pride amongst students to their institutions. The sense of pride can be utilized to harness healthy competition among the students. The study further suggests that students in uniforms are likely to indulge in communal activities like NGO governed events. In other words, the uniforms heighten the community spirit. The sense of community also prevents isolation. Without the uniform culture, some students can isolate themselves and develop troublesome behaviors. They end up becoming self-centered and acquire issues such as mental ailments. However, the uniform culture can prevent such issues. The students will be cared, in a communal setting. Most importantly, the degree of care and respect is heightened via the uniforms (Lewin 1).

Uniforms are also cost effective. They are pocket-friendly to any social class. As much as designer clothes are smart, they are quite expensive. Schools are institutions of learning and not fashion shows. Imagine students thinking about what to wear daily just to look unique. And if a student dresses in clothing on more than one instance, he/she may believe that it is time to revamp the wardrobe. Such undertakings are quite expensive to maintain. The culture of school uniforms cuts down the expenses (Luscombe 1).

Uniforms are vital in improving punctuality. It is hassle free when one knows what he/she is wearing. In other words, once a person knows what to wear, the rest is much easier. In that regard, students do not have to worry about their attires or rather what they are supposed to wear. It is a matter of getting a clean school uniform and putting it on. They do not have to worry how the trouser will match with the shirt. The cold war on who is looking smarter regarding attires is also eliminated. As a result, the process is quick and students can reach school early enough to continue with the other activities (Orenstein 1).

The uniforms also prevent gang insignia and colors. The current generation faces tremendous challenges when it comes to the gang culture. The gang culture influences many students in several ways including clothing. Evidently, many students are influenced by the trends at schools. Giving the students autonomy to decide on their attires is a major contributor to school gangs. Therefore, uniforms limit crime rates within the learning institutions. Taking the analogy of soldiers, if they were to be recruited without considering the uniforms, then the number of soldiers being inducted could have reduced. Similarly, without the strict uniform policy, the number of graduating students will probably reduce. Students will be more concerned with creating gangs or becoming part of them. Therefore, uniforms lessen the chances of violence and conflicts thus championing healthy living in a team culture within the institutions of learning (Lewin 1).

The school attires can also limit bullying and its detrimental impacts like depression and subsequent suicides. Some aspects of bullying are heightened by the type of clothing. This behavior can be considerably reduced through school uniforms. Students who do not have the capabilities to wear expensive clothing are exposed to bullying in schools. However, the uniform policy achieves a considerable amount of fairness that can reduce bullying in the schools. They play a significant role in plummeting peer pressure and raising acceptability. The students in uniform tend to feel more connected and united. The vitality of school uniforms can be evidenced by the sentiments of the former President Bill Clinton who said, “If it means that teenagers will stop killing each other over designer jackets, then our public schools should be able to require their students to require school uniforms (Lewin).” Designer attires influence teenage fights. They are bound to promote different brands while disregarding others which may lead to fights.

Counter Argument

Uniforms can have a negative effect on a student’s self-image. The main aim of wearing uniforms is to give a homogenous picture. In other words, it is meant to improve the institution’s self-image by making people look alike. However, it may not achieve this since people have varying heights, body types, and weights. When a student looks in the mirror while in uniform, he/she may feel the image does not depict his/her best. It is quite unfortunate that girls are the most affected group. They may feel embarrassed especially if the uniforms portray them in a disliking manner. As per the development psychologists, ladies have the propensity to compare how the uniforms represent them. It is common in students who deem themselves as the plus-size or curvy body. According to research conducted by the Arizona State University, students who were not authorized to wear uniforms showed higher scores regarding self-perception. In that regard, they portrayed better perceptions of self-image, as compared to the ones forced to wear school uniforms. Additionally, homogeneity can be boring. Wearing the same attire over and over may lead to boredom, especially as they tend to have similar colors i.e. khaki or blue (Baker 1).

Conclusion

School uniforms are necessary among the students in the learning institutions. Though they can be perceived to be boring due to the regularity of wearing them, the sentiments are not accurate as portrayed by the assertions above. Students are demoralized and face distressing challenges emanating from bullying. Such activities can be limited by adopting a school uniform policy. It restricts the creation of gangs and other discriminatory behaviors. They also improve punctuality. School uniforms are necessary for enforcing discipline from early stages of life which can be carried forward to corporate life. Apart from that, the uniforms create a sense of pride and unity within the school. The feeling of community is also achieved through school uniforms. In general, the adoption of school uniforms ought to be appreciated due to the various beneficial aspects.
