The Style and Structure Employed in Cyclops

The poem opens with a self-reflection in the midst of joy in the kingdom of Troy. There is no sign of hostility or upheaval since life progressed as usual. This is evident in the atmosphere depicted by Joyce in her work of art. The answer aims to analyze the poem's style and structure; the poem is based on flashbacks and Odysseus' history as the poet poses.
The poem begins with a flashback literary point of view on the kingdom of Troy. The center of focus is the peaceful life that the residents under Odysseus enjoyed before the war, the harsh moment during the war, and the unforgettable trauma after the war, as the author says, I was just passing the time of day with old Troy of the D. M. P. at the corner of Arbour hill there and be damned but a bloody sweep came along and he near drove his gear into my eye (Joyce 280). Flashback as one of the literary styles of capturing the attention of the audience is used by Joyce to add flavour to her piece of art. The setting and the storyline of the novel brings out clear the experience of the kingdom of Troy traversing through the war period to post war times. In this regard, the style and structure used by the author aids in getting the audience attention to understanding the details of the piece of art (Joyce 292).

In addition to that, Joyce in her novel employs the use of focus and emphasis on a key character. By spinning around Odysseus, the author builds and distinguishes in her novel the different attention she attaches to the characters (Joyce 304). For instance, the life of Odysseus and his voice is used throughout the episode, this is aimed at rendering a solid picture of his heroic trait that depicts the cultural norms and values of the ancient Greece.

The different styles and forms of writing makes the novel reveal the vast array of meaning Joyce uses in her piece of art. In regard to this, the author employs the use of numerous flashback and focus on specific character’s voice throughout the episode.
