The Berlin Dada Fair
The Berlin Dada Fair brought together participants who were born during the night-marsh war, the crumbling monarchy, and domestic political strife.
Political Division and Engagement
They based their work on student political understanding as often as they were divided by their level of partisan engagement. Berliners dominated the political end of the international Dada movement, transitioning from light-hearted artists of New York, literary focus on Zurich and Paris, to revolutionary war opponents (Bruce & Greenberg 98).
Zurich Dada's Focus on Performance and Literary Innovation
In Zurich, Dada highlighted performance and literary innovation, antagonistic use of words and verbal imagery provoking European middle-class values. Even though Zurich dada focused on performance and exhibitions, the political situation in Germany directed attention to other things. The events in March 1917, depicts the differences in Zurich the development of Galerie Dada, while in Berlin the formation of leftist publishing house Malik-Verlag by two brothers; John Heartfield and Wieland Heartfield.
The First International Dada Fair
The first international Dada Fair was held on June 30 to August 25, 1920, and in the press, it was known as the Great Monster Dada Show. Moreover, the fair depicted the events experienced in the previous two years including the teasing references to the army. The walls of fair were covered with political and propagandist material created from collage, drawings, and paintings. The appended officer with the pig's head was marked as the "Hanged by the Revolution" (Bruce & Greenberg 103).
Photomontage and Innovation in Berlin Dada
Generally, Berlin Dada was associated with photomontage as the most useful innovation. However, the Dada era symbolized the social condition in disjunctive and disordered works and eliminating the classical structure that directed patterns in Cubist collage.
Challenges in Maintaining Unity
Berlin Dada was characterized by different intensity and difficult to maintain such diverse members. As such, by 1920, there was no unity in Berlin Dada.
