How does social science research open new themes in discussions of technology?
Social science diffuses and ensures the continuation of digital research in the areas of policy, multi-disciplinary research, and practice; that way new avenues on technology are opened.
What kinds of topics do you think social scientists are especially well equipped to discuss?
Topics that social scientists are well equipped to talk on include policy, digital research and intellect and how they influence accomplishments. On digital research, they can discuss on the social shaping of digital research and their relation. Discussions on intellect can base on how along with motivation can have influence on individual accomplishments. On policy it is important that they discuss on whether such kind of research should be autonomous or dependent on policy and how these two connect.
How do interdisciplinary or other kinds of connections between different fields of social science play in these questions?
The connections between different fields of social science has not been to bring the aspects of comparisons but to use such in order to deepen research and elaborate how different fields relate to social science and related research. For example on policy comparing STS and IR is not the goal but to show and deepen the research on when and how science connects to policy.
When Does Science Matter? International Relations Meets Science and Technology Studies
What are the main goals of the texts or the researcher who wrote it?
One of the main goals was to find out the role of the Intergovernmental panel on climate change, and how this shapes climate policy, and how this acts as an illustration of conditions under which science matters. The other goal was to find the interactions between policy and science in international environmental governance.
What kind of questions were the researchers asking and why?
Their questions were as follows: Does science matter? ; is the IPCC a failure? ; And what really counts as a success. Asking these questions was to surely help find the answers to the main goal of the researchers and the connection between policy and social science research.
What conclusions or outcomes did they find through the research?
They conclude that there should be more focus on the social conditions which are necessary for science to be relevant in policy-making. They also concluded that viewing science in an uncritical manner could be done in IR and that important discussion on plurality and contingency of scientific knowledge was absent.
What did the reading tell you about science research and technology?
These two are intertwined in the sense that they need each other for clarity and for optimum solutions to be found as there is need for proof and development.
