In 1969, he bequeathed the collection to The Met, where it has since grown to nearly 3,000 works of art. His vision was that the art collection should be accessible to the general public and should be free from commercial interests.The museum's wings contain an eclectic collection of art. The Robert Lehman Wing features Old Masters, Impressionist, and Post-Impressionist paintings and sculptures, as well as an Egyptian monument. The museum also features the Michael C. Andy Goldin, for instance, threatened to withhold his retrospective at the National Portrait Gallery if the institution accepted a PS1 million donation from the Sackler family. As a result, the National Portrait Gallery declined the donation and refused to grant Goldin's retrospective.The Sackler family's contributions date back decades. In 1978, the Met hosted a celebration to dedicate the Sackler wing. Among the guests were the Martha Graham Dance Company and the Temple of Dendur, which had been gifted to the United States by Egypt. Another notable guest was Nan Goldin, an artist who overcame an OxyContin addiction. During her public appearances at Sackler-funded institutions, Goldin led demonstrations to raise awareness about the drug addiction. She later emptied empty pill bottles into the reflecting pool of the Sackler Wing. The American Wing is home to one of the finest collections of American art in the world. It houses over 15,000 works of art and features four floors of gallery space. The center's centerpiece, the Charles Engelhard Court, features large American sculptures, leaded-glass windows, and architectural elements.The collection's breadth and quality make it a great place to study the history of American art from the late eighteenth century to the early twentieth century. It includes many masterworks by renowned artists such as Gilbert Stuart, Thomas Cole, Frederic Edwin Church, Winslow Homer, and Thomas Eakins. Other notable works in the American Wing include Sargent's Madame X and George Caleb Bingham's The Champion Single Sculls.The American Wing is not without its faults.
