The image of nursing

There is little doubt that the media, particularly Hollywood, is a unique medium through which the public can learn about the scope and duties played by nurses. For many years, the media has wielded great power and influence over people's lives. The way nurses are depicted on television, the internet, and in Hollywood movies has greatly influenced people's perceptions. The public can acquire crucial medical information from nurses' participation in movies and commercials. Nurses can agree with me that Hollywood or the media as a whole have created both positive and negative perception of nurses through their nurse portrayal in films and movies despite other studies arguing that the media influences only children and not old people (Summers, 2010).

During World War II, recruitment posters portrayed nurses as heroes who supported fighters. The role of nurses in films and movies depicts them as compassionate and caring individuals who are broadly admired by many and their occupation was every America-girl child's dream. To some extent, the media has portrayed nurses as the most ethical and honest professions. The Gallup poll supported this claim by identifying nurses as honest and ethical professions in 2001.

The nursing profession is in crisis due to evolution in nurses images, particularly in critical care field. Although individual experience shapes this image, the effects are closely associated with media exposure that portrays nurses negatively (Wood, 2008). The MASH film portrays nurses as sexual objects something that destroys positive image of our nurses. The situation is likely to worsen as the image continues to evolve from bad to worse.

The media has damaged the great profession, but the situation is reversible. Several avenues can be used to restore the positive image of nurses and one of the being the media itself. Nursing is a very critical role in every movie and to assure you; it is hard to find a movie without the nursing role. This is a great opportunity for all nurse to clear the mess. Also, concerned parties need to come up with Image of Nurses projects that will educate the public on the roles of nurses, collaboration with medical associations and media to portray nurses positively (Summers, 2010). Teachers and guidance personnel are avenues where people can learn the scope and roles of nurses in our health systems.

Conclusion

There is no doubt that the media has played a prominent role in the evolution of Nurses in both fiction and real life either negatively or positively. The effects of these depictions are reversible thus it is high time for all concerned parts to find lasting solutions.
