The film Oedipus analysis

The Film Oedipus and Room 8

The film Oedipus depicts the events that occurred during Oedipus' reign, as well as the skills that he was bestowed with and made use of. As a result, he achieved enormous popularity and notoriety. In fact, he only became King of Thebes after successfully solving the Sphinx-related mystery.

Room 8, on the other hand, appears to be one of those films that was literally handpicked and ended up on the Oscar-winning list. The Bombay Sapphire Series scripts were written by Geoffrey Fletcher. The latter was the name it was branded after having won the Tribeca Film Festival which took place in 2013. In most cases, the turn that our lives take is pegged on the decisions we make as they would either result in a wrong or right decision in the end.

The Story Behind Room 8

The story behind the film Room 8 is that of the events that unravel inside the Russian prison where a British prisoner; Ives, ends up being switched from one cell to another and there he starts having issues with the partner he finds there. The point if controversy here is the red box located in the new cell. Oedipus on the other hand, talks about the life of the protagonist and the events that took place since he was a kid to the time he was all grown. He literally took the life of his father when on his way to Thebes not knowing who he was and ended up getting married to his mother; Jocasta.

Oedipus Protagonist

Clearly, the protagonists in the play are Oedipus Colonus and the King. The main distinction between the two since there is a time when Oedipus becomes the King of Thebes is the fact that they Oedipus becomes a king before the action involving the part where the king comes into the picture. At first when I started watching the film, I thought that Oedipus was different character from the King but then on paying keen attention, I came to the realization that they are one and the same. The outstanding characteristic for which one can easily find themselves drawn to Oedipus is his imminent ability and intelligence when it comes to the cracking of riddles thus giving him an upper hand in riddling sessions.

Room 8 Protagonist

The protagonist in this film is Ives; a prisoner of British descent but locked up in a Russian prison. On his transfer to the new cell in the Russian prison, Ives is warned by the inmate he finds there against opening a red box but he lets his curiosity get the better of him. He open the box and ends up regretting the reason he never paid attention to what he had been told initially but it was too late to regret as he had been terrified by what he saw after managing to open the red box.

Room 8 Resolution

The prisoner ends up opening the same box that he was forewarned not to and he ends up stumbling on something has not supposed to see at all. In the box, there was an exact replica of the prison they were in. What was quite funny and dreadful in the same instant was the fact that it had the two prisoners who were the occupants of the cell and that got him utterly worried. The reason behind that being that he was not ready to find the same thing he was seeing in the cell in the box that was in the same prison room. In the end, it is proven that the box was escape plan that was devised by Ives' fellow inmate. The latter had the perception that the prisoners in the box could get through tiny places in the prison that he and his colleague could not thus made it the perfect escape plan.

Room 8 Setting

The setting of the movie is that of a Russian prison. The movie kicks off by the point where Ives is seen to be transferred from one Russian cell to another. Since the film is a thriller, the audience gets fascinated by what is in the red box that Ives is warned not to open at any cost.

Oedipus Setting

The film is drawn from traditional setting when the people still had time and value in riddling sessions. It depicts a time when civilization had not chipped into the picture to rescue people from the unintentional lack of knowledge and information.

Oedipus Resolution

The literal meaning to the character's name is 'big foot.' As a kid, he found himself in the desert after being taken from the house of Lais. He became famous for riddles until such a time that he found a solution to a riddle that ended up saving everyone in the village and as a way of thanking him for his contribution; they decided to make him their king.

Discussion

Making the right decision is not always something one decides that they want to do but it comes naturally to those who are used to doing so. In most cases, people just make choices in order to get through the stress and trouble of having t think deeply about the right decision to make. In this case scenario, Ives in Room 8 could have either decided to calm his curiosity about the red box and do as he was told or quench it be getting to open the box. He tried several times nto to open the box but unluckily, his curiosity got the better of him and he opened up the box and found what he was not supposed to. This makes his life in the cell change; he now dreads being there yet initially he had no such thoughts which serves to bring to the audience's attention that Ives' life had changed for the worst.

On the other hand, Oedipus ponders hard about the riddle in order to save the village. He had the choice of just living the people suffer since he had grown not knowing his parents or the city e was born it but he decided to care enough and had pitty thus make the decision to come through for them. However, the issue with this case is that being selfless is not about deciding to be so but it is a character that one grows up having and it becomes embedded in them. He was eager and curious to find the solution to the riddle and it is the reason he solved it. The connection between these two films is that they are both based on fascination and curiosity. The audience would always be busy watching and waiting to see if Oedipus would find the answer to the riddle while on the hand, they were waiting to find out if Ives would open the red box or just leave as it he had found it. The theme that appears to be common in both cases is the struggle that is imminent in the lives of the protagonists.

Conclusion

In both cases, the protagonists made decisions and they all ended up being satisfied. Ives was quite relieved to learn that the box contained an escape plan from the prison thus calmed his dread. Oedipus was happy he solved the riddle and saved the people and he ended up living a better life than before; as a king.
