The Elizabethan Times
The period of time that is generally known as the Elizabethan Times was one of the most prosperous periods in England's history. It was also a period of great discovery and exploration. During this era the first person to circumnavigate the world was Francis Drake, and the country began to establish itself as an international power.
Reign of Elizabeth I
Elizabeth I reigned from 1558 until her death in 1603, and her dynasty would rule Britain for the next two centuries. She was a very powerful queen who made a number of reforms that transformed the country.
Religious Upheaval and Poor Laws
Her reign was a period of great religious upheaval as she reverted back to the Roman Catholic Church and burned many Protestant heretics. She also introduced the poor laws that were later passed by Parliament, and the government became very strict in enforcing them.
Christmas Celebrations
Christmas was a popular holiday during this time and many people enjoyed spending it with family and friends. The four-week period leading up to Christmas was called Advent and people prayed and fasted, or sometimes they only ate certain foods during this time. On Christmas Eve everyone gathered at church and a large feast was held.
Explorers and Artistic Expression
The era was also one of the most famous for Great Explorers such as Sir Francis Drake and Walter Raleigh. There was also a period of great creativity and artistic expression.
Technological Advancements and Education
During this period, the people in England were able to develop new technologies and become more educated. This was a very exciting time for all who lived in the country and it is a period that historians consider to be the 'golden age' of English History.
Social Classes and Economic Growth
Although the nobles of this period had great wealth and titles, the majority of the population was still very poor. This was particularly true of the yeomanry, the 'middle class'. They were able to live relatively comfortably, but at any moment they could be out of work or ill. However, this was a period of great change for the country, and as it was a 'Golden Age' there were also many opportunities to rise in the ranks of society. This is why the 'gentry' were very powerful and became the main class during this time. They ruled the country and had control over most of its laws, though they did not have complete control over the economy. During this era, the English economy grew dramatically, and it became very profitable for merchants to trade with other countries.
Queen's Contributions
There were also many changes to the British landscape as a result of the Queen's reign. For example, she was able to introduce the Elizabeth Poor Law that helped maintain the poor in her country. She also helped to improve the English military. She was able to hire privateers, such as Francis Drake, who sailed around the globe to collect treasure for the country.
Discoveries and Naval Power
The era was a period of great discoveries and explorations by the English, who were also able to build a huge naval fleet. This was a big advantage as they were able to fight off enemies on the sea, and it allowed them to become the 'rulers of the sea'.
