refers to a group of factors that motivate workers to start, keep going with, and accomplish their tasks in order to achieve the organization's objectives. The fact that Wal-Mart, one of the largest retailers in the world, has a performance recognition program in place with both extrinsic and intrinsic benefits, has helped to motivate its workers (Roberts & Berg, 2012).

Intrinsic Incentives


The use of the term "associate" rather than "employee" when referring to the employees is part of the intrinsic incentive component. As a result, Wal-Mart refers to its employees as "associates," which gives them a stronger sense of loyalty to the business. Additionally, per the intrinsic component employees to be called by their first name only, thereby creating a business that is family oriented as opposed to boss oriented. Thus, individuals at Wal-Mart feel motivated and respected irrespective of their position.

Extrinsic Incentives


The extrinsic component entails Wal-Mart encouraging its employees via financial and healthcare benefit. All the associates at Wal-Mart together with their immediate families get health insurances at very low prices. However, the employees have to perform to continue enjoying all these benefits.

Career Development Strategy


The performance recognition program of Wal-Mart also has a career development strategy which aims at minimizing employee turnover by maximizing the fitness level between the employees and their jobs. Besides, the performance recognition program has coaching and training of its employees in addition to partnering with APU which gives credits to the employees of Wal-Mart following their good performance (Soderquist, 2005).

Addressing HR Goals


In this partnership, the goals of Wal-Mart are to improve the morale of the employees besides ensuring the development of their skills, abilities, and knowledge specific to the retail business. Thus, Wal-Mart through this program addresses the goals of the human resource management in employee motivation as well as career development within the retail industry and this has made its employees feel motivated, thereby improving their productivity and contributing to the increased organizational results. However, this program should incorporate the aspect of punishment so as to enhance its effectiveness by instituting various ways of punishing employees who don't improve even after being provided with all these benefits.
