Sculptures and their Dimensions


Sculptures typically have three dimensions, thus they must be able to be viewed from a variety of perspectives.


Materials Used in Sculpture


It is common knowledge that sculptures can be created using a variety of materials, including paper, wax, plastic, and sculptures.


Part A and Part B


Part A and Part B make up this unique paper. Part A has five steps, but Part B only has one. It is possible to learn how to use planes of shapes that are flat or curved in space by following all of the instructions in both parts.


Naum Gabo's Plastic Artwork


Naum Gabo made artwork in plastic which includes: Construction in space which was made with transparent planes entirely and construction on a line. His sculpture known as Constructed Head is an excellent example of a combination of both the fourth dimension and the non-Euclidean geometry. The sculpture was made from intersecting geometric planes made of galvanized iron.


Alexander Calder and his Sculptures


Calder is well known as he developed sculptures in motion called mobiles. He also designed stable sculptures resting on the ground which was called stabile. The enormous stabiles brought about a new and unique experience concerning space where spectators go around and through them. Sudden planes together with angles divide, slice and shape space into numerous shapes. His work was based on making a minimal model which is then enlarged mathematically and fabricated to more extensive scale. The cleverly contrived interaction between the sinuous and straight edges and between the curved and flat planes together with appendages sticking out from the arrangement of support beams share a soaring dynamism and superior qualities. Given that most artists drew contour lines on papers, Calder created a three-dimensional line drawing for objects which led to sculptures. With this, he moved from sculptures which were figurative linear to abstract forms which were in motion.

By folding and bending the paper, it was possible for them to stand on their own. Two or more sheets needed to be combined so that they could support each other as they were falling when placed on their own. This can be attributed to the force of gravity and their minimal weight. To make them balance they needed to be folded and bend them to increase their weight. I came up with my forms which could have a three-dimensional view.

I created multiples of the same form, and they looked different when viewed from different angles. If given a chance to make my art a reality, I will use pedestals as it makes art to be outstanding and provide a good view of attraction. Pedestals also come in various shapes and sizes, and thus one has a wide selection from where to choose from.

It can be acknowledged that the specific properties of the paper greatly influenced the techniques used, as well as, the end product. Having used a light white paper, I found it difficult to achieve the curves I had in mind whenever the 3D sculpture was put to stand on its own. The major factor that caused this was gravity. I was forced to concentrate on less curvy sculpture designs. Following in the steps of some of the earliest sculptures, I used the technique of realistic manifestos, thus, all the forms I created had to exist actively in all dimensions. The resistance to rupture for the paper when stressed was one of the properties that influenced the technique utilized. The width and the length of the paper affect the rupture force. Another feature of the paper that influenced the technique used was its durability and strength mainly determined by the strength of the fiber and their bonding ability used, and length of the paper. Other properties that affected are folding endurance and tearing strength.


Nature, Culture, and Sculpture


Just like Gabo and the other famous artists, I did not put much focus on the physical material I used, that is, the light weight white paper, but on the perceptions of space, movement, and time. The forms I created are both products of nature and culture. It can be acknowledged that nature impacts the imagination of man each and every single day, in addition to this, culture constitutes everything about the social life of an individual and this includes language, norms, and even art, for example, sculptures. If this was a prototype of for a larger work, any material that can be shaped in three dimensions can be utilized in making a sculpture. In making a prototype for a much larger work, I would suggest the use of metal like bronze as it has excellent plastic attributes would be the material of choice and this will work extremely well given that there are parts that will be left suspending. Since the scaling would be large, the location of the final work would be out in the open space, thus, the sculpture can easily be transported to its final destination place.
