The Concerns That Art Historians Have

Any piece of art can be dated in a variety of ways by art historians. This also goes by the name of chronology. If a historian does not already know the date of a monument, they are unable to provide a specific date. However, historians have developed a variety of methods for dating current works of art (Bullot, 128).
Historians can utilize the actual physical objects that were in use at the period in place of some modern inventions that were not used but are now. The materials of a monument can occasionally be utilized to determine when it was made. Some of the materials such as ink and paint that were used in the past are no longer used in the current times. Likewise, some materials such as bronze and diamond were not used in the past.

II. Documentary evidence.

With a dated document of construction of a monument or a building, historians can use them to date the exact time of construction. An example is the financial records used by the constructors to pay artist when constructing a given structure.

III. Internal evidence.

Some of the things such as painting and drawings can be used to date a given work of art. Many artists like painting a given hair style or a prominent person. The works of art and drawings can be used to date the time which the same was prominent.

IV. Stylistic evidence.

Styles can be used to date the time at which that kind of styles was prominent, but it is amongst the most unreliable assessments.

II. Regional style.

They are the different versions tied to a given geographical reasons. However, considerable variations are possible in a given period such as medieval times. Some such as French towering ceilings are used to date art.

III. Personal style.

They are a distinctive manner of art by individual artists and explains the given time and place the monuments were made. Especially those made at the same time and the same place such as the painting by an American artist concerning the trial of Italian anarchists.

IV. Subject matter.

The subject matter is important because they play an important role in the determination of the meaning of the work of art.

V. Iconography.

This refers not only the subject but also the content of the artwork. They depict figures with unique attributes that identify them.

Who made the work?

There are some of the things such as style, this refers to the style known to be used by a given artists, and even if they do not sign them, the work would still be attributed to them.

Who paid for it?

The role of patrons is also important in determining the shape that art would take; this is used in dating the work of art also. Patrons play an important role in the determination and bringing out the subject matter of the painting.
