The Story of Briar Rose is a fictional novel, set in Germany during World War II. It depicts the life of a Holocaust survivor through the prism of a fairy tale. The main character, Briar, was a prisoner at Chelmno, where up to 1,000 people were murdered every day and their bodies buried in mass graves. She later escaped to become a partisan. This book is recommended for mature readers, and will probably trigger some strong emotions.
Alternating Perspectives
The story is told in alternating perspectives. In the first part, Gemma tells Becca the story of Briar Rose during her childhood. Later, Becca decodes this fairy tale to discover the true story behind the character.
Characters in the Fairy Tale
The fairy tale Briar Rose is a story about a teenage girl who has fallen victim to a curse. She must work hard to escape from the curse, but she is not without her problems. In the end, she must put her life in the hands of a handsome prince.
The Thorn Hedge and the King's Son
Once upon a time, a thorn hedge grew around the castle. It grew thicker each year and eventually covered the entire castle. The king's son, however, tried to get into the castle through the thicket. But as he struggled, the thorns and bushes held him in place like hands. Eventually, he became stuck in the thicket and died.
