Answer 1: Conflicts in ‘Shooting an Elephant’ and ‘No Witchcraft for Sale’ are examples that show the relationships between natives an colonialists. ‘Shooting an Elephant’ written by Orwell’s is the tale of a police officer in the Burmese community, he was subjected to ridicule from the community and the colonial masters as well. He was tasked with the duty of enforcing the orders of the colonial masters, and he did with heavy hearts. The police officer however, disliked the treatment the Burmese were getting from the British. Despite the ridicule, he disliked the colonial masters as the natives did. Meanwhile, Gideon the servant in ‘No Witchcraft for Sale’ treated his masters with respect, despite the apartheid to the extent of forming a relationship with the masters_x0092_ son (Teddy) (Lessing 27). Gideon considers Teddy as a new generation, which would consider the natives as equals, from growing in a diverse community, a thought that is not realized. The novel depicts the contrast in ideas between generations, one upholding traditional values, and another opting for Westernization. The plot is based on the marriage of Nnaemeka, an Ibo man practicing Christianity, to Nene who is not an Ibo, but is also a Christian and a teacher by profession (Achebe 22). The two have abandoned their traditions for Christianity, which is met with resistance by Nnaemeka_x0092_s father who supports the Ibo culture. Nnaemeka has to confront his father, who had chosen a wife for his son according to the Ibo tradition and considers his son_x0092_s actions as a plan by the devil. _x0093_Nectar in a Sieve_x0094_ further highlights the conflict between tradition and modernity, with Rukmani_x0092_s adoption of Western medicine to counter her and her daughter_x0092_s infertility. Nnaemeka in Achebe_x0092_s novel is the character I have most similarities, in his upbringing as well as struggles in his adult life. Despite being brought up as an Ibo, Nnaemeka opts for Christianity and even pursues relations outside his clan. I believe that tradition is only useful if it helps all members of the society. Bias, oppression, or harassment of people based on race, ethnicity, country of origin, and even gender are some practices that I do not favor, even where stereotypes are employed in relation to other members of society. The society in which I live is diverse, and culture is a concept that should be appreciated and not considered as a medium by which to erect separationist barriers. I believe in the universal human rights that every individual is accorded and that none of us has a choice in the community one is brought up, it is determined by parents, but as an adult, one has certain inalienable rights, which allow choice.
