Synthesis of Human Sexuality

Influence of Media on Sexuality

My sexuality is most affected by media such as films, television, and the internet. The impact is overwhelmingly optimistic. Television shows and music videos, for example, provide me with a wealth of information about sexual feelings and urges, as well as suitable clothing for teens and adults. Gender roles, attitudes, and actions are among the most important principles I learn from the media. Also, I learn about sexuality problems from television, films, and music videos, such as the dangers of premarital sexual acts, including sexually transmitted diseases, as well as romantic relationships and intimacy. My views of men and women are shaped in part by media content regarding sexually revealing clothing and suggestive body gestures. Reality dating shows such as Temptation Island teach me about sexual socialization especially about what drives men and women in romantic relationships. On the other hand, R-Rated movies, such as the American Pie teach me about coitus, normal adolescent sexuality, and romance. The information is also available in magazines.

Attitudes About Circumcision

In my opinion, both culture and religion play a crucial role in shaping attitudes about circumcision. Ideally, major religions, such as Islam, Christianity and Judaism adore circumcision. Nonetheless, the practice is recommended by medics because it is proved to be important in reducing illnesses, such as penile cancer and controlling transmission of diseases such as HIV/AIDS. The idea of circumcision adults has been controversial since time immemorial. Ordinarily, circumcision process incorporates removal of foreskins. However, there is little evidence that the removal is culturally important. Even the people, who believe that it is culturally important, ask why parents can allow their babies to undergo such mutilation which rational adult cannot do. More so, from the outset, medically rationalized circumcision has been subjected to criticism. For instance, the medics say that the motivation to circumcise minor as preventive health precaution perceive that it takes the male’s best interests into consideration. The medical advantage of circumcision is also inconclusive statement. Some people argue that it is an approach of improving hygiene but there is little information that supports mutilating body parts to promote hygiene. More so, despite that it is believed to be similar to immunization of the child, there are no conclusive studies justifying the notion. Moreover, such nonconsensual circumcision goes against the principle of medical autonomy because it might be against the wishes of the child. However, despite that it is associated with controversies, parents cite medical advantages and socio-cultural relevance to justify the essence of circumcision. Nonetheless, the pro-circumcision physicians advertise themselves as experts that are capable of conducting the practice without causing injury to the minor such as bloodless circumcision procedures.

Cross-Cultural Sexual Arousal

Sexual behavior produces sexual arousal and it varies across cultures. Beliefs about sexuality and sexual activities differ across cultures. Cross-cultural sexual arousal incorporates a plethora of activities such as kissing, masturbation, oral sex, and foreplay For example, romantic kissing before sexual intercourse interferes with coitus negatively according to Hindus of India and the Thonga of South Africa. However, in the Western society, kissing is a fundamental source of sexual arousal. Foreplay automatically leads to sex in all societies but it differs across cultures. For the Melanesia’s Trobrian islanders, foreplay includes biting each other’s lips until they bleed. While other cultures such as parts of Asia and pacific adore oral sex as part of foreplay, others consider it as a taboo. The scenarios indicate that behaviors that are associated with sexual arousal differ greatly across the world. While some cultures have sexual arousal approaches that encourage sexual intercourse, others tend to discourage it.

Homophobia

Homophobia entails irrational fear of homosexuality or aversion to homosexual people, as well as their lifestyle. It is manifested by oppression, discrimination, and persecution of homosexuals. For example, 3 months after Brexit, the number of hate crimes against LGBT groups in the U.K. has risen up to 3000, marking a rise by 147% from 2015 (Townsend, 2016). Such attacks reveal a rise in homophobia after Brexit. Ordinarily, homophobia victimizes, twists and destroys the mental health of all members in the society regardless of their sexuality. Prejudice and suffering promotes torture of the members. Families of LGBT groups also experience emotional suffering when their family members experience such aggression. Homophobia can be reduced by portraying gay images positively in media and other institutions and reducing bias against homosexual in culture and institutions.

Child Sexual Abuse

Child sexual abuse incorporates sexual activities with minors, such as sexual intercourse, child exposure to pornographic images and fondling minors. Child abuse can cause injury of the child’s body organs and consequently difficulties in sexual functioning during adulthood. Psychologically, a sexually-abused child tends to engage in self-destructive behaviors such as drug abuse, and unhealthy interpersonal relationships associated with fear, distrust and powerlessness.

Child Sexual Assault Views

Psychoanalytic Theory

Psychoanalytic theory attributes child abuse to psychosexual development of a child. More specifically, it asserts that sexual abuse trauma during early childhood translates to psychic damage in later life that promotes sexual abuse of children. The children that are sexually assaulted grow up to become adults with a sexually dominant attitude while others develop a feeling of sexual inadequacy. Those that develop a sense of dominance tend to become child sexual abusers.

Victim Precipitation Approach

The theory of victim precipitation states that the interactions between a child and an adult predispose the child to child sexual assault. The theory suggests that children are perceived as active participants in crime. The behavior of the child and environment that they are exposed to provokes the offender to conduct the assault. For example, staying alone with the offender, accepting a ride home and diner invitation can create a notion of sexual consent to the offender and turn out to be an incentive for sexual assault.

Family Dysfunction Model

Family dysfunction approach argues that deviation from the norms such as age and sex hierarchies encourages child sexual assault in families. The model blames mothers for sexual assault of their children. It usually happens when mothers fail to fulfill their sexual fulfillment roles to their husbands and parental care to their children and husbands. Specifically, the child easily accepts sexual advances from their sexually-disturbed fathers to substitute the limited love of the mother.

Feminist Approach

Feminist model attributes sexual assault of children and women on issues of patriarchal society. Specifically, it states that assault is an extension of legal, socioeconomic and political systems that reinforce male dominance in the modern patriarchal society. In a patriarchal society, males view their wives and children as property that they can exploit in any way they wish. Such perception of dominance promotes child sexual exploitation.
