A person goes on a fact-finding mission to create facts about something, which entails conducting inquiries, reviewing written documents, and data analysis. Much of this is achieved to ascertain the reality about the issue at hand and differentiate between facts and myths. The term "study" refers to the process of concluding conducting a series of systematic investigations (Duke University Medical Center, 2017).
The importance of research questions in healthcare
When conducting research, research questions are essential since they help establish the research's goals and objectives. Questions are unavoidable in healthcare because they help assess the best course of action for the patient. The questions also consider the problem's root cause. Questions related to health are best developed and answered using the PICO process as the technique is used in evidence-based practice. PICO is an acronym for; problem, which can include a patient or an entire population, intervention, control, and outcome. Emilia Sanchez is the patient in this research. Evidence-based practice refers to the process of developing decisions regarding the care of a patient by explicitly using current best evidence (University of Washington Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, n.d.).
Emilia Sanchez's background and challenges
Emilia Sanchez was a compliant child and helped out with family chores since she was the eldest among her siblings. However, she changed and started using drugs, crack cocaine. With her mother busy with Emilia's siblings, and her father occupied with his job, no one noticed the change. Emilia gave birth to Joey and opted to abort her second child something which ruined her relationship with her parents. Coming from a Spanish home with strong religious beliefs, aborting the baby was considered an immortal sin and this resulted in Emilia being chased out of the house because she did not repent. Unknown to Emilia's parents was that their daughter was also a lesbian and bisexual. There is a need to understand Emilia's behavior to help her reconcile with her herself and her family and ultimately change for the better.
Cognitive behavioral therapy as an option for Emilia
Cognitive behavioral therapy is a good option for Emilia. The therapy entails changing a person's perception, thoughts and behavior by understanding their way of doing things (Beck, 2011). In Emilia's case, CBT will help establish the primary reasons she chose to engage in drug abuse especially since she had always been a compliant child. Additionally, the therapy will help establish Emilia's reasons for choosing to abort her second child, and why she had sexual relations with a female friend. From her religious background, the two activities are unacceptable.
Parenting programs as an intervention for Emilia
Parenting programs are also a good intervention for Emilia. The activity enhances parenting skills and behavior of both a child and a parent (Barlow, n.d.). It will help her develop parenting skills and also learn how her behavior affected Joey. Behavioral interventions will create room for Emilia to express her feelings regarding her son particular when he tested positive for crack cocaine when he was taken away from her, and what she would want to do to become a better mother.
Key questions related to Emilia's situation
What factors made Emilia change for the worse that is, what pushed her to substance abuse and what influenced her decision to abort her second child? Did her family's reaction regarding the birth of Joey, the presence of crack cocaine in Joey's system and about Emilia's abortion play a significant role in her becoming depressed? Is Emilia considering telling her parents that she is bisexual, and if not what is her worst fear of coming out? Would she want to move back in with her parents, and how would this contribute to her becoming a better person? Will rehab or will counseling help her overcome substance abuse and depression? Given a chance to say something to her parents and to say something to Hector, what would she love to tell each of them? Is there any involvement from social service which could make Emilia become a better person and a better parent to Joey?
