Racism is the belief that people's abilities and characteristics are determined by their ethnicity, and that some ethnic groups are more important than others. When there is war, conflict, or even economic downturns, racism and discrimination have always been used as powerful weapons to instill fear and hatred in others. Through reviews of recent articles and news, this essay will go into greater detail about how racism exists everywhere.
Dove apologizes for a racist advertisement that was widely criticized.
Dove issued an apology on December 30, 2017, after an outcry over a racist ad they posted on Facebook. The advert was a three second GIF that was meant to promote the Dove body wash which showed a black woman peeling off her skin to a white woman after she used the soap. The white woman on the other hand also peels her skirt off to show another woman. The image that was recently posted on Facebook missed the mark because they did not represent the woman of color thoughtfully. The dove company which is owned by Unilever later sent a tweet to show that they have removed the advert (Casey n.d).

According to the Guardian, Naomi Blake (an American artist) had taken screenshots of the ad and shared them on Facebook. The feedback received from social media was damning and swift because many asked why Dove would feature the dark woman first. The message that was passed was that black women were considered dirty and when the dove was used, she was cleaned up to become a white woman. According to Casey, the journalist who published the article dumbfounded the ad to have gone overboard to market their product. As observed, Dove was also under fire in 2011 because they also advertised their visible care product in a campaign of three women: one Latin, one Black, and one white. The idea was to show the ‘before’ and ‘after’ signs when the body wash was used (Casey n.d).

Racism observed in America in a baseball banner at Fenway Park

During a game done at the Fenway Park between Oakland Athletics and Boston Red Sox at the in September 2017, four spectators from the Boston team unfurled a banner that reviled ‘racism is like the American baseball.’ The huge banner was later removed when the crowd booed concerning the banner the guys were removed. One of the Washington posts stated that the protesters sow the group being anti-racist. However, according to the American culture and history, baseball is just a game that reminds the country where they have come from as well as racism. According to the Sox, the banner violated the club’s policy which prohibited that there are no signs allowed to be affixed or hung to the ballpark. Therefore, anyone seen to be involved in such actions were escorted out of the park (Lewis n.d).

Trump’s defense on racism

One night when Harvey became the hurricane in category four about to destroy the coast of Texas, Donald Trump was announcing how sorry he was about Sheriff Joe Arpaio. According to the Time, the political aspects of Trump did not consider that there was a natural disaster taking place. According to Trump, the hurricane could wait for the pressing matter which violated the constitution by discriminating the Latinos who had been convicted for criminal offenses. In 2007, the Sheriff was accused because he chose not to detain people pertaining how they looked. After some time, the Justice Department claimed that Arpaio’s agent were engaged in practices or patterns of law that jailed activities pertaining the Latinos. This made the Maricopa County to be sued by the Justice Department (Ramos n.d).

In 2011, Arpaio was also questioned about profiling practices in Arizona and the Maricopa County by defying the order. In October same year, he was supposed to be jailed for up to six months, but Trump saved him. Donald Trump protected a man who liked discriminating Latinos by destroying their families ever since he got promoted to the Sherriff of Maricopa. Donald Trump also pardoned an elected official who mistreated prisoners by making them put on pink uniforms in an open-air prison. The place which was known as the Tent city had temperatures which reached up to over 110 degrees. Every time Arpaio was asked about the matter he used to say that the Latinos liked it and that he is just doing his job. The sympathy Trump had over Arpaio, in this case, was marked as a lie (Ramos n.d).

In 2012, Trump congratulated Arpaio for successfully investigating the Cold Posse case by claiming that Barack Obama had a fake certificate. Trump through his tweet together with Arpaio also argued that the birth certificate Obama had was a forgery. For years, both Trump and Arpaio with no evidence managed to keep the falsehood information for years without anyone noticing. It was no coincidence also when Arpaio was made a Republican who supported Trump’s contention to work in White House. When this story is pardoned, Trump was defending racism. The evidence was seen through different scenario from the ACLU, the two judges and the Department of Justice that Arpaio promoted and practiced racial profiling.

The incident was noticeable because his agents stopped the Hispanic all because they were undocumented. Moreover, there were many mistakes done that justice was not served where Arpaio did not care by doing things his way (Ramos n.d). If President Trump had the intentions of putting aside the suspicions of racism and kept himself away from the alt-right movement, then he would not have pardoned Arpaio the way he did. Racism is not good even if the President of the U.S condoned it by protecting Arpaio. This means that Trump is passing a message to show how Racism is a healthy thing and that it deserves the presidential pardon

World cup funs cautioned about Racism and Homophobia in Russia

The ‘gay propaganda’ as it was called in Russia was a law that was flared during the Winter Olympics in 2014. The summer World cup which was meant for the gay fans and specific races were cautioned about what they may face in Russia. Since there were tens of thousands of transgender fans who were expected to travel to Russia, they were cautioned that some parts of the country did not welcome the dark-skinned people or the gay community. Moreover, if two transgender spectators were seen walking through the streets of Russia, then they would be in danger. Attacks in Russia as reviewed by New York Times was common, and the aim to promote multiculturalism always led to embarrassing moments. For instance, during the summer Confederation cup, the Cameroon fans were seen wearing bandanas on their necks which always showed signs of racism (Panja n.d).

White racism in the University of Florida

In Florida’s universities, there are teachings in class that show how America has remained a white supremacist state. According to Dr. Ted Thornhill, a professor at the Gulf Coast University said that all they do is to make the students search for the truth. Many Americans end up being cocooned by the reality that concerns racial matters (Parke n.d). Most students end up reading important scholarships with the aim of understanding of racial inequality, white supremacy, and white racism. Many whites, in this case, end up being promoted and subscribed to racial ideologies, practices, policies, and traditions thus making incalculable decisions of maintaining the white ethnic dominations over the black people.

According to Thornhill who was in an interview with ‘Hello SWFL,’ said that not all white people are racists (Parke n.d). He even concluded that even the anti-racist practice racism to derive in some material, measure and psychological benefits. Thornhill then added that the classes are usually taught about genocide, slavery, rape, discrimination, segregation, theft and internment against the non-Europeans throughput there U.S history. He then concluded that the courses were only meant to give students ideas of how to challenge racism and the history of racism (Parke n.d)

Conclusion

Racism, as elaborated in the essay, is a character that is practiced all over. Sometimes, not everyone notices they are spreading the word like the Dove Company, but to some, it is intentional just as seen through Arpaio’s case, the tournament and the Universities of Florida. To conclude, despite the fact that many people make mistakes, racism should not be practiced despite its existence.
