Candidate Paul Wellstone

Paul Wellstone won the 1996 Minnesota Senate race with 50.32 percent of the vote. That resulted in his re-election for a second term (Lofy). Following his re-election, he made a commitment to the health system by extending healthcare services for mentally ill patients. He also wrote a new farm bill with a bipartisan majority and stopped draconian bankruptcy reforms that were unjust to customers. In the coal industry, he worked to open up the National Wildlife Refuge to oil exploration (Lofy). He championed for and secured federal resources for schools in Minnesota and also passed legislation to help homeless veterans as well as to enable military officer victims of radiation exposure to get compensation.

In 1998, he championed the amendment of the tobacco bill to strengthen the provisions for the bill’s international tobacco control and later in the year; he sponsored the Healthy Kids Act that promoted public health and reduced teen smoking in the state. In 1999, he advocated for the well-being of employees by co-sponsoring a bill to compel corporations to disclose pension plan changes to enable them to plan appropriately. More so, he campaigned for an increase in minimum wage increase for workers, which he managed to achieve together with AFL-CIO and the Democratic members of Congress (at least 147000 workers benefited). He also was on the forefront on fighting violence against women, including passing the bipartisan legislation in 2002 preventing international women and girls trafficking, together with Senator Sam Brownback.

Kathleen Rice also won the election with 51.35% of the total votes, which was 186,423 out of 312,861 votes. (New York Times). Since her re-election, Rice sponsored the enactment several bills. These include the Department of Veterans Affairs Dental Insurance Reauthorization Act of 2016 that allows veterans and their dependents to access dental insurance (New York Times). Second, she sponsored a law in June 2017 to allow permanently the Asia-Pacific economic Cooperation Travel Card Program that provides holders with expedited airport processing. Through sponsoring the End Drunk Driving Act, she promoted and ensured protection the safety of individuals (New York Times).

Moreover, she sits in the House Committee on Homeland Security that deals with matters of national defense and the House Committee on Veterans affairs that champion veterans’ benefits. She also fought for reform in the National Flood Insurance Program to enable residents, local governments and business entrepreneurs get funding and support to recover from the storm Sandy. Through co-sponsoring a bill on Students Emergency Refinancing Act, Rice made accomplishments in the education sector by relieving millions of student loan borrowers who took a high-interest loan and are unable to repay due to wage stagnation and economic constraints (New York Times). In 2016, she was a co-sponsor and ensured implementation of the Equality for All Act that advocates for equality and non-discrimination against LGBT individuals. To prevent gun violence, promoting the bipartisan Select Committee of the House that champions legislative acts to end gun violence and investigates effect and cause of gun violence. It is on the ground of her accomplishments that she is seeking for reelection in 2018.

Tony Madalone lost the 2017 Cleveland mayoral election (Cuyahoga County Board of Elections). He was an independent candidate in the September election. He emerged sixth with 4.57% of the total votes (1534 out of 33542 votes). Frank G Jackson won the election with 38.66% of the total votes (12,968 out of 33,542 votes).
