The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the war between the United States and Mexico. The deal signed on February 2, 1848, is still in effect today. The pact is the oldest contract between the United States and Mexico that is currently in effect. This contract resulted in the United States acquiring over 500,000 square miles of valuable land and becoming the world's superpower in the late nineteenth century (USA Department of State Office of the Historian).
Geographical Benefits and Disadvantages
Aside from geographical benefits and disadvantages, the contract has played an important part in deciding both domestic and foreign accounts for Mexico and the United States. However, after winning the war, the United States has had the upper hand in dictating the terms of peace. With this advantage of dictating the terms of the settlement, the USA established an outline of political and military inequality between these two nations.
Texas and Independence
In this way, Texas has never enjoyed taking directions from the federal government. Texas has constantly fought for independence from the federal government ever since. For instance, Texas's Constitution constructs and sanctions are designed by the federal configuration of powers and its accountabilities are defined in the USA Constitution. The idea of being under the federal government has compelled the Lone Star State to fight for its independence regardless of the unprecedented federal government growth. Texas believes that states are best positioned to handle their problems with minimum or no supervision from the federal government. In Neena's article, Texas has also sued the federal government during the Obama administration over 48 times. This was a representation of pride for the state's Republican representatives (Neena).
Texas's Independent Streak
Additionally, Texas has often prided doing things in its way. The state is praised as an independent streak that has the upper hand when it comes to fighting for its sovereignty. Therefore, with its original annexation contract, the state has a better chance to amicably separate itself from the United States because after all, the state doesn't believe in the power of Union of the 49 states (Turrentine).
