Police uniforms with religiously significant items

What people wear has a big impact on how other people are perceived. Police uniforms are required because they communicate power and authority. The outfits make it simpler for people to recognize police officers when they are needed on the street. When those who want to commit crimes see uniformed police officers around, their actions are restrained. Additionally, when police officers are nearby, drivers are more inclined to adhere to traffic laws, but this is only achievable if the policemen are wearing uniforms (Johnson, 2017).
Islam is one religion that has very severe rules about how its adherents should dress. Due to these restrictions and requirements of the force many Islam believers, more so the women have shied away from becoming police officers. To ensure diversity in the force Cockburn (2017) argues that allowing of Muslim women to wear Hijabs as part of the police uniform would encourage many who did not consider policing as a career option join. Officers from different backgrounds bring with them a variety of skills and experiences that are necessary for serving communities and hence the need not lock out people who may contribute a lot to the force by incorporating their religious attires in the police uniform.

Moreover, maltreatment of individuals due to their religious affiliations is uncalled for and that their beliefs should get accommodated unless the employee is likely to suffer hardship as a result of the accommodation (Jacoby, 2017). Allowing police officers to wear items of religious significance would not harm the force in any way, and hence they should be included in the uniform. Charges filed based religious discrimination has increased recently (Weintraub & Riley, 2017). Compromise is essential to avoid the lawsuits consequently leading to harmonious coexistence as everyone will feel respected and included.
