Paolo Veronese

Paolo Veronese was born in 1528 in Verone, Italy. According to the National Gallery (n.d.), he was given the nickname Veronese due to his birthplace. He did, however, later travel to Venice, where he lived the remainder of his time as a painter; he died on April 19th, 1558. Veronese was born to a stonecutter father and an illegitimate child of a nobleman named Caliari's mother (encyclopedia.com, n.d.). It is said that he became interested in art as a result of the influences of various artists at the time. Of great importance to note is that he trained under the leadership of Antonio Badile, one of the renowned Italian painters of this era. The National Gallery (n.d.) further, explains that he married Badile’s daughter in 1566. To further enhance his skills, he served in the studio of Giovanni Battista Carota who influenced him to find his own unique style of painting.

For his career, Veronese took a different approach as opposed to the Titian’s approach. Based on the central Italian traditional approach, he was able to define the principles of harmony and composition throughout his work. To add to this, other artists such as Giulio Romano play significant roles in developing Veronese artistic career. Given that it is in their roots that he followed but having allowed himself to define his own wok characteristics, there is a visible difference in his work from theirs. This is because Veronese’s paintings were done in a classic and harmonious way that differed from his predecessors.

For a good part of his career, Veronese would work for patrons, religious and secular pieces based on what he was inspired to paint one. According to the National Gallery (n.d.), some of his important works include “the full-scale decoration of the Venetian church of S. Sebastiano (1555–around 1570), his ceiling and wall paintings for the library of S. Marco (1556–57) and the Ducal Palace (early 1550s and 1575–82), and his fresco decorations of the Villa Barbaro at Maser (around 1560), as well as a range of major altarpieces.” His work would diverge even further to include mythological paintings purely out of his creativity and imagination. These pieces of work were for international clients who commissioned Veronese to work on them. The below image best shows one of his religious works

Verone’s career was one that was exciting enough even to allow him to have large scale productions. In 1573, he was commissioned by the Dominican friar to paint a large scale piece which he called the last supper. The controversy in this is that it was perceived to have irreverent details (paolo-veronese.org, n.d.) but he was in a position to defend himself. To save the situation, he was forced to change the title of the painting Supper in the house of Levi. He also had a large workshop where he worked and was helped by his brother and two sons, Gabriele and Carlo. Paolo Veronese made great influences for the Renaissance artistic period to become one of the most influential painters of the sixteenth century. As such, he can be considered as one of the greatest painters of our time whose works influenced the growth and development of painting as an art.
