“One Boy Told Me” By Naomi Shihab Nye

In Naomi Shihab Nye's poetry "One Boy Told Me," the poet refers to a wide range of scandals that people face on a regular basis. The poem's phrase of Naomi demonstrates that words have the ability to restore everything to the soul if they are believed. The poem portrays the aspect of proclaiming and finding objects that make human behavior complex. Naomi Shihab Nye's poetry One Boy Told Me is a diverse poem that aims to encourage the reader's mind to look about the usual. By challenging the mindset of the reader, the author can develop a clear strategic decision to make her point and develop the theme of the poem which is love. “And I will be deep water too. Wait. Just wait. How deep is the river?” (1). the statement engages the reader into challenging the facts provided in the books with the precise definitions of nature. Naomi also develops a set of questions in the exposition of the poem which engage the reader in developing a redefinition of the specific words in the vocabulary (1). By asking what the minus mean, Naomi engages the reader in developing a meaning which relates to life issues through the use of figurative language. Figures of speech and poetic devices Symbolism- this is employed in the poem in many verses such as comparing the head to a souvenir, “Your head is a souvenir (1).” There is also use of symbolism when Naomi indicates that music lived inside her legs which are a symbol of the affection she has with music. Rhetorical questions- the poem has a series of rhetorical questions which are intended to separate the intention of the author to the obvious meaning of the statements.
