Monitoring Toddlers with Technology

Children of all ages spend hours on laptops, iPads, and televisions, and technology has emerged as an unavoidable fact of modern childhood. Technology has the potential to engulf the whole world and its inhabitants. Most people do not seem to worry if a child has access to a digital computer, but they are unaware of the long-term implications of such exposure. Technology has been shown to have negative effects on a child’s mental behavior, so keeping an eye on toddlers and technology has become a concern. Children’s use of technology has been related to lower levels of physical activity, which opens up a whole new area of possible risk. Monitoring can be defined as the act of listening carrying out surveillance on, and recording the emissions of one’s own or allied forces for the purpose of maintaining and improving procedural standards and security.

Toddlers that overuse technology pose a greater risk of overeating and snacking. Obesity has been labeled as a major epidemic in the present day society. One of the many leading factors to such condition is technology. Kids have easy access to fast food and everything for them at the click button including entertainment and social networking. Social networking platforms have created other ways through which people can interact and connect, therefore, a child may never leave the house to go a friend’s house and play. As an alternative, they connect with a friend or family member via a digital device and stay at home. The high usage of media during preschool years has been associated with weight gain and risk of childhood obesity. Moreover, such has been promoted by the increased food advertising and snacking while using technology such as watching television. Children that overuse media tend to be less active with physical putting them at greater risks of obesity. While such easy and effortless form of connection may be fun, it puts a child at the risk of obesity, because they will want to eat more.

Technology can affect the sleeping routine of a child. Changes in sleeping routine could result in a child being less attentive and playful. Despite the fact that children learn through engaging in interactive games and watching developmental videos, there is no way to quantify how much is enough through technology. Excessive exposure to technology among toddlers results in the development of a want to continue habit, and due to the busy schedules of their parents there is adequate time to monitor their child’s technology usage. As a result children get less and less active every day (Cannesson, &, Ehrenfeld, 2014).

Professional judgment for determining whether the use specific technology or media is age appropriate, is important when dealing with toddlers. The first years of a toddler in school form a phase where they can easily adapt to anything within their environment. It is the point to where their educators should help them draw a line between what to do and not. They should make decisions on technology and media implementations though applying their expertise and knowledge of child development, learning children’s interest, readiness, social and cultural way of life that the child should be brought up to. Such decisions are critical in the bringing up of the kid since the kid will be able to learn and integrate the use of some form of technology and media for classroom experience.

In occasions where technology is suitably integrated into the environment, daily routines and curriculum it can improve early childhood practices. Such practices could involve use of computers, smartphones and television by toddlers under their parents’ supervision. If technology is used routinely and becomes transparent and the shift changes from the gadget being applied to the activity or the exploration itself by the student technological integration become successful since the use of technology has been able to support the goals of technology used as a means of education. The present world is controlled by technology, therefore allowing children to use them without adult supervision may raise concerns in parents. Cyberbullying on social media has become an emergency trend due to the increased usage of technology among children. Therefore allowing toddlers to use technology without any supervision may subject them to such instances.

Even though children exposure to TV shows and smartphones has many negative effects there are advantages associated to such exposure. A child of over two years should be allowed some time on the screen but still be monitored what they watch. Such little exposure would assist the kid to grow enhance quick responses and improve their communication skills. It is similar to toddlers using toys to enhance the development phase, therefore the use of smartphones and other technological devices should as well be monitored. It is important for parents to take control and monitor the use of technology by their children. Monitoring would help a child realize the distinction between the real world and the virtual world (Radesky, Schumacher, & Zuckerman, 2015).

The reasons for monitoring technology use among toddlers is that it places a child at risk. If children are exposed to too much digital airtime on infancy preschool years will be accompanied by delays in attention, language, thinking and social skills the major reasons causing this is fewer interactions with parents and families. Not enough sleep, children tend to sleep less during sleep time and sleep later babies can even be overstimulated and lack the essential sleep for growth. Obesity, caused by much media airtime and food advertisement and snacking while watching TV. Behavior problems, violent programs may cause resistance or scared and confusion. Technology and all the interactive media are here to stay, young children of the current generation grow up and live in a world where technology is growing into a tool of the culture at school, work, in the community and at home. The pace at which technology changes is so rapid that the society is experiencing a disruption. It is the tool used for communication these tools have transformed mainstream culture, how parents manage their day to day activities and seek out entertainment, how tutors use learning materials in class with young children and communicate to parents, the shift to new media and the need for digital literacy will continue to model the world in which young children are developing.
