Being raised in one of the fastest-growing and most digitized states, I was a good conversant with the new gadgets on the market and the latest gossip in town. At a very tender age, I began using a phone. When I was one year old, I would scream for the phone of my mother, and when I was granted, I would try to do what she did. Things like to pretend to speak to strangers on the internet, to take photos, and to talk in a voice that no one else but me can understand. Ha-ha… That was quite the scene, though. At the age of two years, my mom was forced to buy me a toy phone because the love I had for phones was way too much. I acquired my first android phone at the age of 4 years old. When I see a teenager without a phone I always ask myself lots of questions like how is he keeps abreast of what is happening? Does he know what is trending? How does he keep in touch with his friends and family? It just seems too crazy to live without a phone. My phone has always been and will always be my number one asset on my list.

As I wrote my media log diary, I was extremely surprised to see how much media I expose myself to in a day. The thought of starting this project gave me a headache because I knew it was time to reduce the usage of my phone and that was a very hard thing to do. My mother kept complaining of how much time I took on my phone than on anything else like my studies. I was a bit impressed with the outcome considering the fact that am ever on my phone whether it was at home, in school or with my friends.

I was amazed to realize that I had turned out to be an antisocial person due to my attachment to gadgets, especially my phone, to the extent that I found face to face conversations trivial and potentially time-wasting. Most of the time, I would chat with my friends on We Chat, surf school work, write my homework using the word app on my phone, listen to mp4 music via youtube, face timing with my friends or watch movies on Netflix.

My phone would only rest when I was asleep, walking, typing assignments via the computer or when charging. I had discovered how to entertain myself without a second or a third party, my phone was what I needed. I can entertain myself with Facebook, Instagram, twitter, Netflix, and youtube. I also discovered that my phone made work easier for me. Instead of visiting my friends, I can just call them or even text them and know has they are faring on. I would also use my phone for e-commerce and the commodities would often be delivered to my doorstep. How good is this gadget!

In my room, I have a radio that serves as a background noise. I like listening to music while doing my assignments, surfing the internet and as a lullaby to help me sleep. I actually do not pay much attention to the radio than I do on my phone, I use it because it brings some sense of warmness into the room and makes me feel relaxed and at ease. My phone, on the other hand, makes me forget all my worries and the day’s hustle. It makes me feel like everything is okay and I should not worry about a thing.

When I decided to put my phone away for some time, it was not a walk in the park. It was a bit difficult, but thanks to the television in the sitting room, my radio, my computer and my friends and family; I had sufficient company to distract me. I actually thought it wise that this would be the best time to interact with my friends and family face to face and not via the phone. This would also be a better time for picnicking and go to the parks with my friends for a bonding session. I went for a picnic with my family and we really had a fantastic day. Indeed I was really missing out on a lot of things. Later in the day, I went to watch a movie with my friends which I found to be fun and exhilarating as opposed to watching the movie on my own. I really had a lot of fun with my friends and we had a lot to talk about.

On the next day, I was indoors, bored as I thought of what to do. I turned on my radio and listened to music. I found myself dancing to each tune of the music. My kid sisters came and joined me and it was super fun. I had really missed playing and hanging out with them. When I checked my watch, I was surprised to realize that 6hours had gone by and yet we had done nothing much but dance. After dancing, I went to the sitting room and we started watching cartoons with my kid sisters. I was very blank on which station to watch because I was used to my phone and Netflix. I was also blank on the programs on the television. They all seemed too new for me and yet they have always been there. Things like news seemed too boring for me to watch.

After watching for about two hours, I went back to my room to finish up my homework. I turned on my radio first and then my computer. I listened to music as I was typing my assignment. I was so surprised because I did not, at any chance, missed my phone. I was very much okay and in fact, enjoying every single minute of my life. I really thought that this task would be very hard for me because I was really addicted to my phone. It was like my whole life depended and was rotating on my phone. My phone was my everything; friend, entertainer, relaxer, stress reliever, emotional reliever, news channel, and my goddess. The thought of going a day without the phone was unpleasant, similar to walking without your shoes on.

I really like this project. It has really taught me a lot that I was not privy to due to ignorance, arrogance and denying the change in life. This project was necessary to reduce the addiction and the connection that I had with my phone and at least have time for my family, friends and myself as well.
