Lessons out of the Teamwork Project

I have a lot to think about after my experience with the Brasserie Gustave teamwork project at the Royal Holloway School of Management, University of London. Case study projects have a number of components, the majority of which don't call for a one-person approach, and therefore present significant problems to students (Galegher 80). As a result, after going over the broad class topics and directions, our team started working on creating an exhaustive and thorough case study. As a result, the knowledge I learned, the experience I gained, and the contributions I made to the conclusion are all noteworthy and useful. It is on these grounds that this essay seeks to provide my personal reflection based on the group project that we undertook.
Lessons Learnt Through Teamwork Project
I learned a greater sense of belonging. In the process of researching into our chosen project Brasserie Gustave Hotel, each one of our group members had a particular role to play. Whenever we met for discussions before we finally submitted the fully combined work, it was evident how each member's contribution was significant. Members entrusted me with the duty to provide background information and an overview of the restaurant industry in London. As I presented the bits of information, I had gathered in our group, original looks of approval and critique provided a sense of belonging and significance that could never be found in the general class discussions. Besides, I learned the art of confidence. The teamwork project was the first task that required me to do research and make presentations before a group of people. I gradually became confident in my ability to fulfill my obligation as part of my duty in the group. Our group members are also built confidence in me such that if there was to be a presentation required of our project team I suspect they will not hesitate to give me the opportunity.
Moreover, I learned that teamwork fosters accountability and timely delivery of a project (Cargnin-Stiela n.p). It is because the aspects that were required in the case study were many and diverse. The outline involved both short cycle processes and long cycle processes which needed in-depth qualitative and quantitative analysis. In the case of our selected industry, hospitality industry in London, there are many stakeholders and the hotels. For instance, if one person was to perform all the tasks concerning the case study, Brasserie Gustave in South Kensington then it was practically impossible to meet the deadline for submitting the work. Additionally, even as we presented the project for awarding marks, I have remained accountable for the information I provided to the group members. The greater sense of accountability was also instigated with the awkward feeling of being the source of failure to the whole project team (Gallie et al. 30). I promised myself never to be the cause of such misfortune. The same feelings of accountability and responsibility have remained in my mind even after the project ended and I believe that it will continue to be a virtue in me.
My Contribution to the Teamwork
Through my participation in the group, I made a significant contribution to the overall collaboration in ways that cannot be overlooked. First, I fostered cooperation and support for one another in the group. In this case, my initial anxiety and fear provoked my team members to encourage and promote open discussion all areas of the intended Brasserie Gustave Restaurant. As a result of these discussions, pieces of advice on how to access credible sources of information followed. If we ever score good grades in the team project, it will be due to this fact. Notably, when I made a presentation, and the team members noticed how extensive it was that is I included quantitative data on the number of French people in London, they became absorbed in an effort provide better insights into the various areas of research (Galegher et al. 150). It merely pointed to the extent of motivation towards the achievement of better outcomes in the teamwork project.
My contribution towards the teamwork is also evident in the unity, learning and stand for different perspectives. After every meeting, I encouraged members to be united in the pursuit of the highest grades out of our teamwork project. In this case, we would hold hands together and echo the slogan "One for all in all for one." As a result, it became our aim to support each other with any relevant information on their research topics. The positive critique that came out of our group discussions enabled us to blend so well, in the end, we remained friends. Meanwhile, as a member of the group I made a contribution to the overall learning that occurred during the period of our interaction. Our divergent opinions finally became the source of different perspectives in our project work (Gallie et al. 34). It implies that I am part of the output and unique approach to the aspects such as PESTLE analysis as included in our project work. Moreover, I am part of the efforts that resulted in a timely delivery, efficiency and effectiveness in our project team.
Using the Information Learnt from the Assignment
I must acknowledge that upon the completion of the project team assignment I gained useful information in two major areas that is from the experience of the management of the Brasserie Gustave Restaurant and the teamwork. The experience of the administration of the hotel, Brasserie Gustave will help me in conducting extensive market research into any industry in which I will invest so that I do not tread the same path. In our case study, it was clear that the initial research into the market in which the business was to operate was not adequate (Galegher et al. 402). They ignored Porter's micro environmental analysis involving the five forces in the marketplace and suffered from adverse competition. Additionally, the market research underestimated the political and economic impacts. As a result, they had to exit the industry in the wake of Brexit. Being a business-oriented person, I will use these insights that I have gained through the teamwork projects to establish a successful business in future.
I must also point out that the teamwork experience has provided useful information to me. I have realized quality and motivation in teamwork. In the past, I have put futile personal efforts in trying to grasp concepts that I could have easily understood in a group discussion. I feel like I was so mean to myself in that recent past. Now after the project, I will fully be involved in group discussions and participate fully in group learning activities. It is because I am not able to individually build the kind of strength and self-drive that I experienced in the teamwork project. Besides using it in my studies, I will also use this valuable information in my future career to enhance the level of output among fellow employees. The realization of my strength that is confidence out of fear and anxiety is part of the information that will help me throughout my career (Cargnin-Stiela n.p). Currently, I am aware that other malleable characters are built. Therefore, I am already in the business of working on my personality to avoid temper.
Value of Experience gained in The Project Work
Working together in a team was a valuable experience in that it has given a new dimension to my life and even to my fellow team members. It is due to the extent of my dedication to the teamwork that I now feel a great sense of accomplishment, have self-confidence and willing to incorporate more aspects of group work in my studies. Collaboration has made concepts that appeared so complicated to me to become simpler. Such aspects as Porters Generic models are now part of what I call cheap. It implies that the experience I gained is the reason why I can approach both macro and microeconomic models through teamwork and succeed in understanding them. Moreover, the value of the experience I gained through the project team is apparent in the problem-solving ideas I now own.
Besides, through participating in the project team, I have learned several contemporary issues in my immediate environment including an increase in the cost of hotels up to £65 due to effects Brexit and other business strategies. These aspects will continue to be helpful in the pursuit of my future career in business management (Gallie et al. 40). Besides the personal attributes that I have built and will continue to embrace, the experience in the project team has promoted the culture of teamwork amongst us. I learned greater learning opportunities available to those who study or pursue anything as a team. On the other hand, I noticed, how easily my fellow team members were motivated to work and produced greater output within a very short time. Additionally, other noticeable aspects fostered by the teamwork such as unity and accountability are valuable experiences to me.
Conclusion
Evidently, in the reflection of the group projects, it can be seen how we quickly managed the unusual case study. In the process, I noticed that there is much including a sense of belonging that I could not have learned except for the teamwork project. Despite my initial fears and anxiety, I still made tangible contributions towards the cooperation exhibited in our project team. I gained valuable experience that has enabled me to grow in personality and knowledge and will continually be of help in my future career. Therefore, I can attest to the fact that teamwork is vital in outstanding achievements.
