Illegal immigration issue

According to Homeland Security, illegal immigration along the United States' southwest border is on the rise once more (Shafritz et al, 2009). Border Patrol agents apprehended approximately 16,000 illegal immigrants attempting to enter the country, while custom border protection officers encountered nearly 5,000 illegal immigrants who arrived at ports of entry without authority. Unfortunately, the utilization of multiple border patrol agents to contain the issue will do little to reduce the flow of illicit immigration. It is because fiscal powers will remain to push and pull the interminable supply of unlawful immigrants into the U.S and other developed countries around the world (Shafritz et al, 2009). The immigrants will do anything within their means to cross borders since desperation knows no boundaries. The objective of this paper, therefore, is to analyze the notion why unlawful immigration is geopolitical disarray and will stay so.

According to the article, it is clear that different states are torn in between the economic benefits that illegal immigrants bring to the country and the adverse effects they present to the states (Shafritz et al, 2009). It is apparent from the fact that there has been the battle between the municipal courts that uphold the Hazelton laws and the federal courts. The civil court of Pennsylvania had decided to fine the landlords and businesspersons that will accommodate the illegal immigrants. However, this approach was dismissed by federal court claiming that municipalities have no right to preempt the federal authority (Shafritz et al, 2009). The battle takes center stage due to the reason that the federal government is well aware of the economic benefits that the illegal immigration are offering to the country especially in the agricultural sector given that the natives are not able to undertake such jobs. Similarly, most illegal immigrants do not pay taxes due to under the table employment opportunities that sustain them and allow them to work without health insurance and poor economic conditions. However, when a comprehensive process that comprises a background check, paying the penalty and paying taxes is put in place, then this will be a fair idea to the government and all the citizens equally. The ordinary people will not carry the burden of immigrants when it comes to paying taxes anymore (Shafritz et al, 2009).

On the other hand, documenting all the illegal immigrants is not an easy task considering their number as well as the security of the country. The blame is therefore shifted to the federal government for their failure to stop the influx of illegal immigrants (Shafritz et al, 2009). Due to the influx, the federal government has failed to adequately compensate both the local and the state governments for the costs they incur in providing services to the illegal immigrants. Despite the economic benefits that the illegal immigrants offer to various states that accommodate them, it is clear that the cost of services that these countries give back to the illegal immigrants outweigh the benefits that they provide to the states.

The failure of the federal government in managing illegal immigration affair has compelled and stretched the national and local administration to offer billions of dollars to carter for medical, education and other common services (Shafritz et al, 2009). It is a burden to the local and the state government hence an indication that indeed illegal immigration is an intergovernmental mess and will remain that way as long as various government stakeholders do not come together address the issues collectively.
