Daytripper series

The main motivation behind creating this work of art was to illustrate the everyday struggles that individuals face, like death, but also highlighting their longing for immortality, as seen in the multimodal images above. The artwork's main goal is to draw attention to the behavioral parts of people's lives that are most important to them. The themes of birth and death are intertwined throughout the works of art, with the majority of the images showing our desire for immortality. The artwork demonstrates the vulnerability and fragility of the state of birth and death by analyzing how frail life may be. Clearly, the themes of life and death in the pieces of art are prominent with the drawing and the crawling child depicting a sense of hope of better things to come, however hard the situation. Therefore, this artifact purposefully highlights such realities of life by the use of a paintings which uses high contrast, shape, and lines to capture the deeper meaning of life and death.

Audience and Effects of Specific Dimensions/Elements

When an artist comes up with a piece of art, there are many things that they regard, and this entails knowing their specific audience. In this piece of artwork, the target audience entails all those people who have never come across this kind of art before. In most cases, different audiences respond differently to artworks. Indeed, the pieces of artwork use vibrant primary colors that convey a sense of order and stability in the artwork. Further, the artwork will make the audiences conceptualize the concept of living despite having a fear of death. For example, in the artwork with a woman playing chess with a skeleton, the concept of death is inspired by the painting. Further, the painting with a crawling child inspires the desire to live and the yearning for immortality. Moreover, the painting of a red and yellow tulip contained in a small vase, a brown skull, which seems as though the skin has already decomposed off, and brown hourglass with sand all placed on a table surrounded by a dark background represent the concept of death. The painting was made by Phillipe de Champaigne and is known as the Vanitas.

All the items in the painting all have different meanings as the Vanitas aims to make a person reflect on the worthlessness of life. All the elements on the table denote doom with the tulip indicating the temporary glory, the hourglass showing the passing time, and the skull indicating the inevitability of death. The painting tries to indicate the precious nature of life, the fact that every person grows, and when the time is up, a person meets their death. Nonetheless, there is an image of a skeleton holding poker cards black aces and eights, which in medieval times symbolizes bad luck, death, and other times bad omens. The picture of a skull with the words “Am I a monster Ideal-I Life or Death Mortality Fear” inscribed on the forehead shows the fear humans have towards mortality. Consequently, the drawing of a skull serves to show how people are aware of the terror that comes with the awareness of their impending death. However, humans still strive towards having an immortal life. Moreover, the image where a person is shown falling depicts the short aspect of life. The black foreground that shows the person falling through a pit indicates death whereas the red indicates war. It's possible to deduce that the individual falling through a hole met their death through murder.

Lastly, the small child has tried to show the desire to keep moving and to live despite the adversities that are in their surroundings. The background pink and purple colors encapsulate the transient motions in life with the bright colors adding to the warmth of the painting. The variations in colors can make the audience come up with many interpretations regarding the art. For example, the painting depicts the small child crawling through a tunnel in a way that seems like she is not aware of all the things that are surrounding her. In another instance, the viewer can conclude that the child is surrounded by turbulent times as depicted by the whirling mixture of purple and pink colors which in most cases people associate with death.

Response to Daytripper

In all the Daytripper series, all the protagonists meet death through accidents, murder, natural deaths, and sickness. Bras, who is the main protagonist, lives a carefree life with his family, and though he is a writer in an obituary column, he cannot understand the nature of death as it comes abruptly. In one instance, he died while on the way to celebrate his birthday with his family. The artwork depicts such a case in a person’s life by indicating life through the various paintings as highlighted above. The pieces of artwork succinctly espouse the terror management theory as seen through the eyes of the small crawling child, which highlights the desire to live. Further, it is evident that in all the pieces of art, the paintings depict the desire for immortality and the limited time humans have for living. Without a doubt to feel meaningful is to feel immortal.
