The Impact of Globalization on Hunger Problems

The vast number of people plagued by hunger problems around the world is worrying, and the pastoralist way of life is no longer sustainable. Globalization should resolve the above problems and have a positive effect on the lives of people all over the world. Globalization's results will help people improve their living conditions and reduce hunger. Jerskey's book engages readers from a global viewpoint, painting an image of the impact of globalization on various areas of the world.

The Complexity of Hunger Situations

In their article “More than 1 billion people are starving in the world,” Abjit Banerjee and Esther Duflo demystify the fact that many people survive on less than a dollar per day (Jerskey 2013). Research done on several urban slums and rural villages of the world revealed a complexity that exists with hunger situations. In several instances people do not set their priorities right and thus are not able to deal with their hunger situations. Policies in the ground are not helping to alleviate the hunger situations due to corruption and inequality as such it has become a redundant problem. Hunger can be caused by a number of factors stemming from climatic conditions, poverty situations and health situations of individuals (Singer, 2004).

The Challenges Faced by Pastoralists

Francis Kuria, in the article “Is it time for the Turkana to leave their wastelands and settle down,” depicts the actual situation which pastoralists go through (Jerskey 2013). A case scenario in Turkana, Kenya is painted where the pastoralist way of life is no longer tenable. The mushrooming of urban centers due to globalization presents new opportunities which people can embrace in order to survive. Adverse drought, which is perennial in the area, has prompted the government and other support organizations to step in and distribute relief supplies to the emaciated children and adults. This has to change since it is evident from the past experiences that the situation is getting worse day by day as the weather conditions across the globe become less and less predictable as a result of global warming (Rodrik, 2011).

Improvements Through Technological Advancements

New technologies have improved on food production and storage. Food can be produced on a large scale in areas with high potentials, and the surplus stored for the future. The opening up of areas through development of infrastructures such as air, water, road, and railway transport has enabled food to reach areas where there is scarcity. Essentially, food production in areas with adverse climatic conditions has also been improved by using technologies such as greenhouses and irrigation. The health situations of the people have improved as healthcare provision has developed and medicine can easily be supplied. This improves on the productivity of the people as such they are able to work and satisfy their food requirements.

Challenges of the Pastoralist Lifestyle

The unpredictable weather conditions often manifested by drought conditions have made the pastoralist lifestyle unfulfilling. Losses in terms of deaths of livestock due to lack of pasture and water have made life difficult. Their proximity in terms of location has also limited much of the gains out of their activities. It is high time the people from Turkana become educated to improve on their knowledge and skills as such they can create innovative techniques which can help in improving the lives. New methods of farming can be adopted which can be effective even in drought conditions. The knowledge gained can also allow them to gain meaningful employment.
