Formal properties of art

Two museum art pieces are provided; one depicts an intimate couple, and the other is a landscape in a hilly area. Artists employ various methods and types of art in an effort to convey a message to the art collector who wants to see and interpret the art in its entirety. As a result, there are some techniques known as the elements of art that can be used to characterize various states and moods that an artist might attempt to depict in his or her paintings. The painting shows a medieval Chinese style landscape with the tree having orange autumn leaves next to a flowing river that has a footpath crossing right above it. The hill in the background appears to be misty and the mountain paths are outlined as if they are diagonal.

Lines

The artist of the painting uses a lot of diagonal lines in the works. The footbridge is in a slight diagonal angle, also the footpath is in a diagonal angle. The mountain sides also appear to be in a diagonal angle too. By using these diagonal angles the artist tries to portray the feeling of movement. Shape and Form

The most part of the art tries to bring out a lot of triangle shapes. The triangle shapes signify peak. The artist tries to convey that the journey down the path would lead to the peak of the mountain. This could also be used to explain various different contexts also in terms of real life challenges and real life journeys that people make in their lives. It would often be a winding uphill road in order to reach the peak of their potential. Besides, there is a moon to signify that it is probably dark. The mist signifies a cold and dull weather. The moon shows that at times the path to greatness will not be open and clear but one will have to follow the dim light of the moon to get to the peak whereas the mist shows that at times within the bushes the path will have a lot of challenges.

Color

The colors that the artist of the painting has used are dull colors to suggest the lack of light in the dark of night. This darkness can be used to convey the sense of mystery in the art. The artist tries to show that this path to the peak is very mysterious and it is not known whatever hides in between the trees and within the mist or in the shadows of the light of the moon. The low intensity of the colors or the dull colors that seem to be diluted into each other convey a sense of seriousness in terms of the mood shown.

The painting shows male and female faces leaning into each other. The female figure holds the male’s head to bring out the action of kissing and intimacy. The entire painting is done in black and white

Line

The artist has used both curved lines and streaks of straight lines in his or her drawing. The curved lines, in essence, are meant to symbolize the human figure and the sensual feeling and pleasure that come with it in order to present the romantic mood.

Space

The artist has tried to bring out both the positive and the negative space factor in the painting. In the positive space region, the two lovers are there close to each other whereas the negative space in the black background shows that the two are isolated in a world where only the two exist. Color
