Environmentental challenge

We learn about the existence of a state-owned park via the site description. The park contains flora and fauna that should be conserved, and their conservation will be regularly monitored. The trees serve as a habitat for the plants. The trees, however, are intended to be destroyed since they would interfere with the light tower's operation. The removal of trees will ruin fauna habitat, rendering the fauna homeless. Based on this, and while monitoring the protection of flora and fauna species, it becomes difficult to carry out this project.

The company owns several cranes. The vibration of the cranes as they locomotes also destabilizes the fauna. The fauna would find themselves moving in all direction in the park as the cranes move. The noise also emanating from the movement of the crane also destabilizes the fauna.

In this regard the company ought to undertake an ecological and biodiversity field survey and assessment of the Site to establish the current ecological baseline and assess the potential impacts of the development on terrestrial vertebrate fauna and flora.

Thus the final layout of the site should avoid the ecologically sensitive areas at the Site and would not have a significant direct impact on the ecologically important parts of the Site.

Socio-cultural challenges

The native people of the island have title rights over land and water although they lead a nomadic life style in semi-permanent structures. The challenge here is they can relinquish their right rights. They also practise sand mining and now how they can seize their sand mining sites for erection of a light tower is in question.

Weather factors

Overall, the manner in which these climatic factors are identified and ultimately addressed by the project managers is a key determinant of achievable success at the site of construction. The high rainfall during the period of the project may umber the effective delivery of the project as the site may flood from time to time.

Sustainability

Due to the socio-cultural issues of the people of the island, and their economic activity of mining and tourism, this project may not be sustainable. It will take quite some time.

Risk Assessment

The inherent risks in the island such as political instability bureaucratic, procedures and lack of adequate infrastructure such as transportation networks electricity supply and telecommunication system. These challenges may render the execution of the project untenable.unless such challenges are addressed before the start of the project. Infrastructure should be put in place and the beauracracy reduced. There is need to develop appropriate management tools and techniques specifically tailored to the project environment of the island.

Delivery Process

To start with, the company is supposed to begin with construction of a gravelled road to facilitate movement as there is no such road. This is likely to take time as the road ought to be usable before the company starts to use. The material for the road construction will be stored elsewhere other than the site because there is no road. This means an alternative storage site should be sought. Once the gravelled road is done, the equipments and other materials can now be transported to the site ready for the construction of the light tower.

Justification of the selection of construction equipment. The equipment selected for the construction work include company owns a range of cranes and BSP pile hammers, together with all ancillary equipment needed to drive piles and to undertake concrete works. Other equipments to be hired include they require front loaders, dump trucks, graders road rollers, to provide a base course of compacted earth or other material, sometimes macadamised covered with one or more different layers of grave.

The crane was selected because construction use light tower requires use of heavy materials. The crane is used for this purpose; moving heavy loads beyond human capacity. They also facilitate movemement of materials. Because the construction involves us steel and concrete the BSP hammer will be relevant in installation of concrete and steel during construction. The other auxiliary equipment will be used alongside this hammer.

Construction of gravel roads

Construction of gravel road requires large machinery to work and pour concrete and or to lay and smooth a bitumen -based surface. Compared to other roads, gravel roads are easy and cheap to build. However, they are very expensive to build when compared to other low cadre roads like ill weather compared, as they require front loaders dump trucks graders and road rollers to provide a base course of or other material, sometimes macadamised ,covered with one or more different layers of gravel. Graders are also used to produce a more extreme camber compared to a paved road to aid drainage, as well as to construct drainage ditches and embankments in low-lying areas. Cellular confinements systems can be used to prevent the wash boarding effect.

Accommodation

We are informed that camping on the site is permitted for some areas only. Limited accommodation can also be found at some resorts on the island.Accommodatingp personnel at the resorts other than at the site is an option but will not be effective as personnel will be required to travel from and to the site. A practical solution would be to organize and arrange for the accommodation of the personnel at the site. Unspecialised personnel may be hired from the nearby Dunwin so that they can feel to be part of the project.

Selection of an appropriate foundation for light tower.

There are certain sub soil classification that would act as the best foundation for light tower.

These subsoil classification match with their allowable bearing pressure.

For Rock the subsoil condition should be not inferior to sandstone, limestone or firm chalk and requires at least a pneumatic or other mechanically operated pick for excavation. The approximate allowable bearing pressure is 1000 kN/m2.

For Gravel, sand the subsoil condition should be Compact and equires pick for excavation. Wooden peg 50mm2 in cross section is hard to drive beyond 150mm .The approximate allowable bearing pressure is dense to very dense 150-400 kN/m2 Loose to medium dense 50-250. KN/m2 .For Clay, sandy clay the Firm and it requires to be moulded by substantial pressure with the fingers and excavated with graft or spade appropriate allowable pressures is 50-100 kN/m2.

Sand silty sand, condition for subsoil clayey sand and requires that loose tp be excavated with a spade. Wooden peg 50mm2 in cross section can be easily driven the appropriate allowable pressure is.
