Addiction to Drugs: A Disturbing Trend
Addiction to drugs and other substances is one of the societal problems facing my generation. Many students start using drugs at a young age. Cannabis and cocaine are two highly addictive substances. Young users who develop drug addictions tend to rely on the substances for survival. The youthful generation’s use of drugs, especially from a young age, is a disturbing trend. Because of their addiction, young people’s lives are wasted to the point where their hopes and dreams are dashed. Peer pressure and unsavory company are two of the most frequent causes of drug addiction. Students, especially those in high school, tend to follow the multitude mentality.
The Influence of Peer Pressure
The students smoke bhang and consume cocaine for fitting into the group formed by their peers. The young people fear that standing out from the group and refusing to follow the group would make them outcasts in the group. Therefore, they use the drugs and addiction sets in slowly. Drugs are expensive to buy. Therefore, the young and jobless students end up indulging in crime to generate enough money to fund their drug consumption. Most of the people in my generation waste their lives through addiction to the drugs. The process of beginning to consume drugs is very harmless according to them. However, when addiction sets in, the individual loses control of his/her life and depends on the drugs at all times.
The Implications for My Generation
Therefore, I feel that the trend might waste my whole generation and the next. The rate of addiction in my generation might lead to a bogus generation in the future. When the older generation becomes less productive due to age, it will be the turn for my generation to offer guidance to the next generation. However, if the drug usage trend does not change, the next generation will lack credible role models to look up to as a source of direction. My generation needs to focus on the future and avoid losing attention to drugs. The only way to maintain focus is to take responsibility for one's actions at all times. Group mentality and peer pressure are very misleading. Therefore, the best approach is for my generation to avoid bad company and stick to career and academic goals in life.
The Role of Parents
Parents need to keep a keen eye on the young generation. Most young people make irresponsible decisions due to lack of guidance from a parental figure in society. With the global economy running twenty-four hours a day, and a high cost of living, most parents are concentrating on their income-generating activities forgetting to pay attention to the young people. Therefore, the young people become drug addicts without the knowledge of the parents. The parents have a responsibility of guiding the young generation to success. Therefore, the parents need to concentrate on both the career and the family. Lastly, the respective governments need to work harder to keep the country safe from drugs.
A Collective Effort for a Successful Future
Drugs enter the country and circulate in the market to the extent of getting to young people. The government needs to monitor the markets and put an end to substances that risk the lives of my generation. The war against drugs and substance abuse requires a collective effort for a successful future. Failure to that, the next generation will not be in a position to steer the country to peace and prosperity. Drugs and substance abuse are a worrying issue in my generation. However, the collaborative effort of the young people, the parents, and the government will lead to a satisfactory solution to the problem. The issue deserves attention before the whole generation becomes addicted to drugs.
