Dada

Dada was an art movement that sought to produce artwork that upended bourgeois feelings and posed complex social questions. Kurt Schwitters 1922 is responsible for all Dada sculptures. The art was propelled by the unification of the Dadaists, who shared a similar style of art and used orthodox tactics, provocations, and demonstrations to enthrall culture and push it into self-awareness. As a result, the word Dada became associated with an anti-rationalism trend. Kurt's art employed a style that forced society to think in order to grasp the significance of a single piece of art.
The artwork in the image indicates some train tickets, rags, newspaper scraps, chocolate wrappers with a number 50 shown on it to indicate the number of the art in his whole collection of arts. Constructivism art is a 20th century invention that embeds sculpture, architecture, design painting, and photography to convey particular meanings. This piece of art (Échelonnement désaxé) is attributable to Russian artists. Constructivism works on the fact that art serves a social purpose, which extends beyond the aesthetics. The constructivists started their art through the emphasis to use ideas in creating solidarity, productivity, and corporation in the society. Analyse

The piece of art shown here is an Échelonnement désaxé with physical dimensions being 27*35.2 cm. It has eight successive crests and incomplete troughs that are placed on top of each other. The bottom side of each feature is flat and the middle two are larger than those above and below. The background of these painting is black with the successive ridges being white. This piece of art is an invention of Sophie Taeuber-Arp and is on Gouache paper.



Interpretation

At first glance, one does not exactly understand what Échelonnement désaxé poiece of art means. Echelonner means to space or spread out. Desaxe means unbalanced. This piece of art denotes the spreading of time. Something can be spread out with time but depends with what a person does to achieve the spread. From the middle, the one can choose to go either direction. Thus, the spreading of the crests and troughs is in a continuum but is unbalanced. The position of each feature depicts a present moment and people should try to live it. The spreading indicates that as time goes, what was held diminishes into the past and one has to continuously put efforts to work hard to live.

Judgement

This piece of art is difficult to understand at first glance. The message contained in the art does not have a direct meaning but a person can create many meanings from the arrangement of the ridges. However, the meaning that one derives from the art would depend on a person’s current status and how they are fairing. The art has a hidden meaning that would require a deeper reasoning and conceptualizing of the painting. Looking at how Sophie Taeuber-Arp presents her art on the paper, it is clear that she want the audience to have a thought and create a meaning out of what their eyes can see.

Both Dada and Constructivism art pieces are creations of the past and by a movement of artists who had common life. The Dada art is attributable to Kurt Schwitters in 1922 while Échelonnement désaxé art is attributable to Sophie Taeuber-Arp in 1934. Dada artwork was done on either wood or stones while Échelonnement désaxé art was done on a paper. The main difference between these two pieces of art is that Dada style has many objects embedded in it. On the other hand, Échelonnement désaxé art does not feature many objects.

However, Dada art is more elaborative due to many objects, colors and the nature of background embedded in it. This is different from Échelonnement désaxé art which does not have more distinctive features and will require more thinking before one comes up with his/her own meaning.

Judgments

Of the two pieces of art, I find Dada art being more relevant and effectual. Much as art has some hidden meaning, it should subject the audience into so much thinking if it has to be used by many people to create meaning about their life.
