The Creative Process
The creative process unfolds in a step-by-step fashion, beginning with the selection of a theme for the work. In our situation, for example, it was "Journey to the Edinburgh Castle." The intention or goal of the photo essay can then be deduced from the theme, which, when combined with the use of imagery, allows for an enjoyable reading experience.
Educating Readers about the History of the Castle
Notably, the objective of my photo-essay was to educate the readers about the history of the castle since its establishment. However, the essay also touches on the lore that surrounds the castle, which makes for fascinating reading. Moreover, the photographs used in the essay had informative insights on the areas in the text around them and were arranged in a specific sequence, meant to capture the eye of the reader.
The Excitement of Writing a Photo Essay
Arguably, a photo essay is one of the most exciting essays to write because of the fundamental effects created by using images alongside text. Using image and text simultaneously in any paper creates an intriguing narrative. Even though the text might be brief, the images are also informative in their right, and the audience can associate them with the topic at hand. In the process of authoring a photo-essay, utilizing images engages the readers by peeking their interest. However, images are subtle, and though a picture might inspire a thousand words, they are, for the most part, subjective. In turn, this makes the audience want to know more information concerning the photograph from the text. In the photo-essay about the journey project, most of the images used were scene photos. Using scene photographs together with text efficiently sets the stage of the narrative. As a result, it becomes possible for the audience to visually witness what is chronicled down in the associated text, as well as gain a better overall picture of the area of focus in the photographs. Also, the photo-essay titled, Journey to Edinburg Castle, contained unique photographs (such as that of the Canon), which summarize the primary role of the castle over the years, as a fortress. By combining both images and text, the photo-essay leaves the readers with a keen perception that captures the theme of a narrative in a way that neither text nor image could manage alone.
The Narrative Deepens Comprehension
The narrative in the photo-essay deepens the comprehension of the readers about the journey project in many ways. For instance, the narrative communicates fundamental information by explicitly focusing on the castle over the years; since its construction and inhabitation, to its use in contemporary society as a historical landmark. As such, the narrative introduces the dimension of time in the essay making the audience understand when the castle was constructed, the number of battles that it has endured and memorable events that have taken place in the castle over the years. More so, the narrative integrates dramaturgy into the essay making the entire story more interesting. One of the dramatic compositions in the narrative is the part that attempts to explicate why the castle is haunted. Since the essay is a linear narrative, it has an introduction; which introduces the reader to the castle and the purpose of the visit, the body; which portrays images and texts showing the Castle's interiors, such as the tunnels, as well as the conclusion; which chronicles the significant events associated with the castle up to the 21st century. Undeniably, the narrative in the essay is succinct, and merges text and images to create a holistic and exploratory photo-essay.
