Comparing and contrasting the article

There are many paradigm changes and interpretations of how a culture sees and responds to the question of the manufacture and use of products and services. The loop of product and service production and use has resulted in a relational framework that serves as a yardstick for social groups. With regard to social groups, the representation of a stable existence is based on the amount of property one possesses. In fact, those who are perceived to be rich and living a healthy life are known to have the ability to buy all that they need (Rockwell). This idea is deeply entrenched in the society today more than ever before. In the two articles, many issues are brought forth to the subjects of discontent and consumerism.

In his article, In Defense of Consumerism, Llewelyn Rockwell Jr, comes out in defense of the modern-day ways in which consumers are spending their income. He further goes ahead and illustrates why the consumerism is vital to the survival of the industrial society. He paints a picture of mutual existence between the consumers and goods and services produced by the industrial corporations (Rockwell). Unlike the clear perspective of the concept of consumerism and the constant portrayal of it being a bad habit that is meant for a waste of income, he asserts that it is an aspect of improved standards of living. For that reason, people will continue to strive to possess all the goods and services that will make their lives comfy regardless of the cost.

On the contrary, The Creation of Discontent, an article by Juliet Schor looks at some of the things that have made the society become discontent in the lifestyle. Most of the ideologies that are driving work and spend cycle is the obsession of material possession a thing that resonates with capitalism school of thought (Schor). In pursuit of the material wealth and a luxurious lifestyle, most of the people in the society will find the urge of working for overtime to cope with the ideologies of accumulating possessions that portray a measure that distinguishes the rich and the poor. The latter seems to be a thing that everyone is scared of, and this is why all the consumerists are compelled to put up with the pressure of work and spend cycle.

These two articles both seem to be intertwined with the fact that one leads to another. To put differently is that discontent is brought forward by the habit of consumerism. Since consumerism has become the order of the day, most people are now trapped in the in the feeling of discontent. The industrial society is now in the race to put up with the demands of the consumerist for a good lifestyle (Rockwell). Discontent and consumerism are subjects that have a very slim line of distinction which can only be demonstrated by looking at each objectively.

Llewelyn Rockwell Jr views the fact that consumerism plays a significant role in the survival of the industrial society by highlighting the part of the consumers as far as buying of good and services is concerned. Nevertheless, the consumerists are compelled to work overtime due to their incessant need for material possessions as those who are wealthy are perceived to have wealth.
