Communication is the most vital element in an interpersonal relationship. Often, for relationships to be successful, there must be the capability to communicate well. Communication is important in all relationships as it lets in sharing interests, concerns, and support for one another. My research consists of how conversation plays a large function in the exchange between people. In this research, I will be using websites, magazines/articles, journals, and e book chapters. There are many aspects that contribute to communication. It helps to make selections and it allows people to work together, interchanging facts in the form of ideas, wants, desires, feelings, and much more. Insufficient communication can create a strain in a relationship. The degree of the strain can vary with the severity of the unclear communication. Lack of communication or not knowing how to communicate is a common reason why relationships fail; the success of any relationship relies on the ability to communicate well. There are people who choose not to share their issues, this can lead to lies, losing trust, and respect. A person can also feel like they are not worthy of hearing others complaints and concerns. Communication is a valuable tool in an everyday relationship when it comes to keeping a tight bond in the relationship.

Introduction

Lack of communication or not knowing how to communicate is a common reason why relationships fail the success of any relationship relies on the ability to communicate well. As a matter of fact, communication is the exchange of ideas over a communication medium. Being able to communicate, and do so clearly and properly can go a long way in settling issues in relationships on reciprocal terms. Communication is mental, physical and verbal. Most relationships fail because of the lack of communication between the partners. Personal relationships are fundamental to being human. People are expected to be successful communicators as parents, children, friends, intimate partners, students, and coworkers. Interpersonal communication investigates both nonverbal and verbal message exchange between two people regardless of the relationship. Interpersonal relationships are an essential part of everyday life. Proper communication does build respect, trust, and harmony, in a society since problem-solving is done in a caring, affectionate and creative manner that allows for the thriving of ideas and concepts. The periodical by N.A. on “7 insightful questions everyone in a healthy relationship should ask.” Atlanta Journal Constitution, web 25 Feb 2017, explains how mastering communication in a relationship is key. It details how communication is a valuable tool in personal relationships and how it resolves issues. I agree with this perspective due to the fact that that talking about concerns or anything one wants to know solves the problem before it even starts.

Types of Communication

There are various types of communication, namely; written, verbal, nonverbal, and visual communications. Written communication refers to printed communications, while verbal communication is the auditory-enhanced communication. Nonverbal communication is the one where there is no use of verbal cues, while visual communication majors on diagrams and aids in communicating. These types of communication are often employed in tandem, parallel and collaboratively thus complementing one other.

Elements of Proper Communication

Proper communication can help foster good relationships while when done improperly, it can run well-maintained relationships. From this angle, we see that communication is a double-edged sword that can cut both directions, it can build relationships as well as destroy them, the latter being much faster than the former. This section of the part shall major on clearly highlighting the characteristics of proper communication and how they help improve the relationships. The first characteristic is clarity which refers to the aspect of communication in which there is no ulterior motive and that is communicated is what is intended to be received. Clarity is crucial in any communication as it helps move the relationship fast and avoids unnecessary hurdles that could result in misunderstandings. Simplicity is the second characteristic and which make the communication desirable and warm. Simplicity mean that the communication is likely to be understood by everyone as opposed to complexity which would leave the audience hanging thus creating disharmony rather than the intended harmony. The third characteristic is a communication that is targeted to a specific audience and thus its contents tailored to the audience. This helps encourage cooperation and freeness in the conversations that happen. For example, when a television show is meant to address the adults, it shall have material that is tailored towards the adults such as sexual scenes while when the same show is viewed by children, it can cause an uproar within the societal setting due to the inappropriate exposure. The last aspect of proper communication is the ability for the message to retain its integrity which means that the information must be protected and reach the receiver from the sender as it was intended without leakage or alteration.

Negative Effects of Bad Communication

These aspects have been mentioned within the previous section, however, they have been highlighted here as well to emphasize the double-edged nature of communication, which shall help put everything in perspective with regards to the thesis of this paper. Bad communication is characterized by selection of wrong channels, poor medium of delivery, inappropriate language, unnecessary noise and ulterior motives. These elements have varying effects on the relationship between the person communicating and the receiver, some of them such as ulterior motives can completely ruin relationships while others such as poor choice of media could only cause simple misunderstandings that can be quickly resolved.

Goals of Communication

Communication has four main goals which are; to inform, to request, to persuade and to build relationships. Information is said to happen in this context when communication is used to give the data or material, that are relevant for decision making without necessarily advocating for a certain course of action. The persuasion aspect is when communication is employed to reinforce or alter an individual’s perspective on a matter or subject. Last but not least, communication is crucial in building relationships whether it is animals or people which involve the repairing of relationships, the building of new relationships and the amendment of failing ones. These goals are intertwined due to the fact that they are all aimed at promoting understating between people, in fact, each of these goals tie in with the last goal on building relationships.

Discussion

According to Adelman et al, “Communication Networks and the development of romantic relationships and expansion of uncertainty reduction theory.” 10:1 (1983) pp. 55-79, lack of communication or not knowing how to communicate is a common reason why relationships fail and the success of relationships is anchored on the ability to communicate well. Research has demonstrated that people experience less uncertainty with regards to their romantic partners and are less likely to end their relationships when proper communication is fostered between them and their loved ones such as their partners, family and finally, friends. This supports my argument because it talks about how communication plays a large role in relationships. When people communicate with their partner’s family and friends, they establish a better bond between them, clears doubts, and creates a stronger bond in the relationship.

Communication is a major dimension of family life and family interaction, this is evidenced by Barnes et al in. “Child Development: Parent-Adolescent Communication and the Circumplex Model.” 56:2 (1985) 438-447. The authors discuss in detail how communication can express thoughts, feelings, and wants. They emphasize the role of communication in the family as it is the central manner of expressing needs, wants, and concerns to each other. “It is through communication that family members are able to resolve the unavoidable problems that arise in all families”, Barns and Olson detail how communication is important in the family relationship because interaction can eliminate the tension, open up, and address issues. From this work, we see that communication is crucial in the development of strong bonds between family members and people who are close together. As a matter of fact, it can be argued that effective communication is the glue that holds families together.

Additionally, communication can connect people with common competencies and goals. As a matter of fact, this is what is seen in the modern world where social media sites are at their peak. Essentially, these sites and their associated instant messaging applications are founded on the basis that people, e with common interests shall communicate and want to find one another when given the opportunity to. A detailed example is Facebook which ballooned when everyone realized its use in grouping and linking people with common backgrounds, careers, and hobbies among other things. In “The Relationship between Self- and Other-Perceptions of Communication Competence and Friendship Quality.” (Arroyo et al.) the effect of communication on friendships is discussed in detail particularly with regards to its role in making friendships grow. The work notes the importance of communication competencies in friendships and how communication can connect people with common interests. Building a friendship is an interesting process as it involves finding out much about a person and realizing how much he or she has in common with you. When friends share openly and honestly their thoughts and feelings, trust in each other tends to develop and grow naturally.

Communication is also key to success in the workplace since it facilitates the organizational harmony and employee co-operation. As a matter of fact, communication at the workplace is crucial in participatory planning which is the emerging trend in today’s heavily connected organizations, businesses, and enterprises. This is exemplified in the book “From coworkers to friends: The development of peer friendships in the workplace.” Cahil et al (2009) p273-299 which majors on how exploring factors and communication changes related to the development of workplace friendships. Additionally, communication helps relieve the workers of their grievances, especially in organizations optimized to encourage communication such as flat management organizations. Furthermore, when addressing. “How to improve your relationships at work.” Liloia, Nicole Forbes, explains how positive relationships with coworkers can contribute to making the work environment a more enjoyable place to be. From this standpoint, we can see that communication can effectively eliminate barriers when working together. Liloia details how communication can bring people together to socialize and be on the same page.

Despite what has been discussed in the previous sections, we see that effective communication can be hindered by several factors. First of all, expressing oneself effectively is often hard for several people as discussed in ‘‘Communication in Interpersonal Relationships’’ (Cahn et al, 1985). Additionally, listening, cueing, and negotiating skills place limits upon interpersonal communication competence. Expressing how one feels can be hard especially if the other person does not understand the message clearly. That’s where communication comes into express exactly what one wants or needs. Cushman and Cahn detail how communication comes across in the form of ideas wants, and feelings. They further explain how interpersonal communication can be seen as an important area of study and practice with its own unique function, structure, and process and its interaction with other communication systems made clear. Cushman and Cahn detail how getting to know someone can make the relationship grow or fail based on interests and support for one another.

Last but not least, communication is invaluable between teacher and student relationships. In the book, “The Teacher-Student Relationship as an Interpersonal Relationship.” (2000 p207-220.) Frymier et al believe that good communication creates a conducive atmosphere for a classroom environment. This is true due to the fact that learning is essentially pegged on communication.

Conclusion

Communication is a process of hearing ideas and passing on information and serves several functions. However, it is key to note that communication must be employed properly and specifically in order to culture relationships, as a matter of fact, poor use of communication can damage relationships.
