College Football essay

College football is the most popular sport in the United States and the majority of schools in the country have a college football program. The NCAA, National Collegiate Athletic Association, sets rules for the sport and divides colleges into divisions. The top division is the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and the next level is the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).

Colleges in the Power Five conferences are considered to be the best teams in the country, and they command the most attention from fans and television viewers. These are the Big Ten, the Big 12, the Southeastern Conference, the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Pacific-12 Conference.

The college football championship is awarded to the team that has won the most games in a given season. In the past, this was decided by a variety of methods, including polls from the Associated Press and coaches’ polls. The AP poll is the most popular of these, and in many years the teams that ranked first in the AP were also crowned national champions.

Historically, only two teams have been crowned national champions in each year; however, with the advent of the BCS, three teams have been able to win the title. The top four teams at the end of the regular season enter a postseason tournament to determine which one will play for the national championship.

When it was founded, the National Collegiate Athletic Association had no specific criteria for determining a national champion; instead, it ranked teams by a variety of factors. This system was later replaced by a computerized ranking system that used various combinations of newspaper and online polls, coaches’ polls, strength of schedule, and other factors.

While the BCS has been effective in selecting a national champion, the system can create controversy. For example, in 2003, the finalists were chosen based on a complicated computer system, and there was a large amount of controversy over whether the ranked teams that finished atop all of these rankings should be considered the champions.

Some coaches, such as Knute Rockne at Notre Dame, have made their mark on the sport. Rockne won three national titles in his career, and he and his players were regarded as some of the greatest ever.

In the modern era, the ACC, Big 12, SEC and Pac-12 are considered to be the best conferences in the country, and they generally compete for the most wins. The most successful college football programs in history are located in these five conferences.

The most famous college football team is the University of Notre Dame, which won three national championships in the 1990s and has had a long and rich tradition of winning. Its football programs have been led by Hall of Fame coaches like Frank Leahy, Ara Parseghian, Dan Devine and Lou Holtz.

Other well-known college football programs are the University of Michigan, the University of Alabama, the University of Florida, the University of Georgia, the University of North Carolina and the University of Oklahoma. These teams have all won national championships, and they are some of the most popular college sports programs in the country.
